Hello,

Planning on doing my first DIY oil change on the Ibiza.
What's the proper tool to get access to the oil filter?
2.0 CR diesel engine.

It looks a similar set up to my last car - PD130 - but space is at a premium on the Ibiza. On my last car I could get a big shifter spanner on it but I don't have space to do this.

A quick google shows various tools and sockets from 32mm to 48mm claiming to be the correct tool.

Can anybody point me in the direction of the correct size?

Thanks,
Colin.

You can use a strap wrench to get the filter off

Not on the 2.0TDi you cant.

The top of the filter housing needs to be unscrewed and the filter is inside it.

EDIT - the hex on the top of the oil filter housing cap is 32mm.

It's a 32mm socket or it's vw special tool

I'd guess it will be a 32mm hex socket, better than bi-hex. Laser Tools and others make sockets for this sort of task, usually they have a 3/8" square drive. They tend to appear on ebay quite cheap, I recently bought one for the oil filter on my S4, you don't need to pay proper prices.

Edit:- the ones I'm referring to are designed for removing oil filters and are not designed for heavy use on large nuts or bolts.

I would advise getting a 1/2 inch one with a ratchet because they can be quite tight on some of them

Right an somebody help???

I've done my oil and ( was meant to be doing the oil filter ) but I cannot get the plastic top the bit that holds the oil filter in off??????I've tried using a 32mm socket and it just will not move..

Is there anything else I can use like a strap tool???

Mines a PD 170, its the hardest most ridiculous housing I've ever tried to remove...

After it has slackened of a bit, there might be a "dopy" lug that will resist it being fully slackened, in my experience that bit will move out of the way under the rotation of the 32mm hex socket.

Also I'd reckon while someone suggested that it should be a 1/2" square drive socket and not as I suggested 3/8" square drive, as the housing is plastic, consider this, if it is too tight to use a 3/8" square drive socket on, what sort of "super strength" plastic are we talking about, come on it is just plastic, if it is not coming off while using the correct oil filter removal socket, it will not be coming off in one piece.

So, if you are really worried, before you go any further into this task, go out and buy a new housing and use it as advised on the VAG filter element kit.

Sounds like someone has been a gorilla with that top cap.

They should only be tightened to 25Nm
