Evening folks, I hope all is well.

I have a 74 plate 333 bhp AWD 2.0T Cupra Leon estate. My wife has a 1.5 TSI 148 bhp Leon FR.

Is there an oil we can use that is suitable for both vehicles?

I get lost with all the different specifications and wondered if there was one oil that can be used for both.

Any help appreciated 👍🏼

The scientific way of doing it is to look at the maintenance manual on Erwin for the two. That's the manufactures statement of what they say. They use VW spec codes. Having got your code you then look at which oil matches the spec. That's what we did for the Ateca and Arona here. They use hardly any oil so never need topping up. If you are doing your own services then you will be needing greater volumes. The specs of VW fall into annual and long service regime. Latter every two years service. That oil is more expensive. I tend to buy a bottle of long service for top up and be done with it knowing I will probably never need to top it up on the annual service but depends on mileage.

I got a sneaky suspicion there is a web site driven by your car reg that directs you... which there is:

You probably need to observe that it's petrol in your case. Some of those recommendations put you in the ball park. Hammer away at the VW code as well on the recommendation as per the service manual from Erwin to make sure it feels right. The dealer should also be able to tell you. I went straight to the horses mouth which is Erwin. One of the uses of the maintenance manual in the pdf collection. Costs you about 8 euros an hour register your big business 😉. Buy two hours and download all relevant manuals. Like buying a Haynes manual of old.

I think the site doesnt know the engine type just the model so you have to interpret that. Diesel / Petrol but points you in the right direction but the maintenance manual is a cross check incase they have duff information. Things will be a lot easier when we are all driving EVs on some stuff. Where the build codes come in handy off Erwin going back to source. Mind you if the car is customised so much the build codes and registration look ups wont tally... could be thinking of you... I dont know

HA HA Yes build codes mean nothing on my motor, lucky it will never be sold and I know whats best (hopefully) for mine.

When I did a search on mine on the Opi site it gives you a drop down list of all the different engine configs and I have in the past used the chat system to ask about best oil for my car as well.

If you send me the VIN number of each vehicle I will happily look into what oil grades you can use.

We went into the local seat / Cupra.

I asked them (service desk) what oil our cars would use. She took the Registration numbers and simply said "your wife's is 0w20 and yours in 0w30". That was it. As they don't sell 1 ltr bottles that was all she was willing to discuss and said, check Halfords.

So I looked on Halfords (and Opie but that site doesn't even recognise my registration plate - not going to trust anything they recommend, it's not even a private plate either) and it appears my 333bhp Cupra Leon estate can use the Shell Helix Pro 0w30 and she can use the 0w20.

But...

They have all these other codes and VW specifications on them. No idea which is which and what is what.

They weren't very helpful lol

Your car (with the EA.888 2.0) will more than likely need VWG Spec 504/507.00 (was 5w30s, now 0w30s).

Your wife's car will need VWG Spec 508/509.00 0w20s.

Hi James.

I will send the vins tomorrow if that is okay with you.

No rush for a response. Just amazes me that they charge so much for these Cupra cars, want to be seen as up market, yet my experience with the dealers is awful. Worst service I've had from car dealerships. They either don't care or don't know lol

There is a Google AI if you put the wrong oil in it between those Vag specs.

I just out the old oil when I buy a new car and put the recommended in it and be done with it. Carry a small container as well, so that gets emptied into the bigger container and the small bottle topped up should I need it. But with diesel regeneration the spare oil gets put back into the engine so I never find it uses any. Where it can disappear  .

Below is the VW spec:

I changed my car from long life to fixed servicing as that's the way I've always done it.

The wife has her car serviced annually also.

I assume that won't impact the oil for a small top up bottle.

Looking at the Shell Helix Ultra specs, they seem to match those stated by @James_R in his above post.

Just waters the oil down is my understanding although I'd just buy the correct be done with it. Take the other down to recycling.

I do have a story where on my old 45ES Uno, 900cc the Fiat dealer put the wrong oil in. In winter cold starts it was like stirring treacle. Resistance to turning over. Had a year of that till the next oil change. Might have been six months. In those days more oil changes than now.

To be fair I don’t know what oil they put in my car at its service lol. Could be anything and I’d be non the wiser.

Anyhow, went to Halfords and got the Shell Helix Ultra whatever it is 0w-30 that had all the codes written on it. That will do lol

Thanks for the help everyone
