Was washing and waxing my car the other day and a few areas of paint work feel matt and dull. I use turtle wax hard shell wax and it alwasy makes the paint feel incredabily shiny and smooth.

However, in a few areas, specfically on the back bumper above the exhaust but below the boot lid and also just below the rear window on the passenger side it has a matt texture even after washing and waxing it.

The paint work still looks shiny and there is no difference in sight from any other areas, just purely the feel of it. Shall i T-cut the area with metallic paint restorer or is there any product that may solve this problem?

Is there perhaps a reason for why it is like this?

cheers for any help!

from the way you desribe it, it does sound like bonded contaminents, clay basically pulls of the dirt and you have to lube the car as you use it with a quick detailer (QD) so that the clay doesn't stick to the car.

Hope this helps mate, can pick up a meguiars kit for about £10 on ebay, should solve your problem.

ok mate cheers just read that thread....

it is almost directly above the exhaust so think maybe the soot from that may have something to do with it...

do you wash the car before the clay clay before the wash? Aslo do you then apply your wax after you have used the clay?

i would personally do the following.

1. wash with 2 bucket method
2. Clay the whole car with plenty of lube
3. machine polish with megs DA polisher & sonus polish & pads
4 apply sealant / wax i have found victoria wax concours to be the best

you looking at a full days work to propperly detail a car to make it seriously shine, and it should only need doing every 6 months or so.

i dont machine polish....usually just wash the car using the two buckets method, then just apply the turtle wax.....but i will invest in some clay and lube and apply that to these dull areas....and then put the wax on afterwards!

thanks

i noticed that with my bonnet and front right hand side wing, they dont feel as smooth as the rest of the car

Where is everyone getting these buckets with the grills from ?

Is it just an ebay jobbie ?

Im going to start using this method soon :)

probably bird sh*t*, no joke, i had some areas like that and when i went to the 'washnwax' meet i asked about it and its exactly like u explained, kinda matt effect non shiny paintwork, he said there is something is bird sh**e that i think he said is like acidic or something and like burns into the paint, but he used his machine polisher which was an expensive little meguirs number and it removed it, gotta work hard on it tho, im pretty sure he said it could be done by hand, cant remember too much on it but try really rubbing into it with polish or use a high powered polisher, if that dont work then i dno mate

cheers for the reply scott,

gave it a real good rub down ;)...with t-cut metallic restorer and it started to get a bit smoother, but i did have to reapply 2 or three times, i then coated with hard shell wax, but going to give the clay bar a go, cant do any harm!....it doesnt look matt, only feels matt

Has it had a respray at any point?

My bro-in-laws car just went in to have his Mercedes Benz alloys refinished by Mercedes, and the car came out of the garage feeling very 'gritty' or unsmooth. We spent hours with a machine polisher rubbing it down and eventually we got it back to a smooth finish. Although MB won't admit to anything it makes you wonder if the wheels were sprayed on the car without much care and attention, and parts of that repaint job are sat on the lacquer.

Tree sap is also another summer 'evil' which can make your car feel nasty.
