Parts and mapping advice

Hi guys,
I'm about have the 'big' service on a 2003 Cupra, including cambelt. Once that's sorted, I'm going to have a stage 1 remap.

I was looking at the REVO SPS and it seems that it enables boost and timing settings to be changed but not throttle and fuelling (for this vehicle). What I haven't been able to establish, either from REVO or the dealer, is whether the other settings are something that the dealer can set. If they are something the dealer will set up, I'd like an idea of how to select suitable values.

It may be of interest here that REVO did state they are looking into offering forum discounts 'very soon'. Anyone know any more?

I thought it would be a good idea to change the brake pads while I'm at it. From reading here, my thoughts are that there's no real need to upgrade the rears. Am I correct in thinking that the OEM are Pagid? Is there a specific model number or name? Is there any real need to change front and rear at the same time?

For the fronts I asked for Ferodo DS2500 and was quoted £190 fitted. That seemed a lot, so I'm wondering what would be a worthwhile upgrade over the OEM without going to that expense? I was quoted £90 for Brembo OE aftermarket but couldn't get any more information on what they actually are. Any idea what these might be (Cupra R pads?) and whether they're any good?

The tyres also need changing and I'd quite like Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance. The highest speed rating seems to be W, would these be okay? I've always used Y as that's what the originals were but manufacturers change tyres all the time and I don't know if they have to be Y. Otherwise, I'd probably go for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 or Falken 914.

Finally, I thought about changing the rear wiper to a Fabia one. Will this do (sorry can't post url)?

Longer post than I intended, thanks for reading!

custom maps ftw personally.
these are old cars and the variance between them now is wide from what I see

Thanks for the replies. Due to a range of factors, at the moment I plan to stick with REVO for the tuning, which isn't to dismiss the input I've had.

So, is the unit in the link correct other than the cap?

What I'm still really struggling with is getting enough information on brake pads. Are the stock/OEM Pagid?
Eurocarparts stock front Pagid pads for about £20-40. Will these be any better than standard, I've read good things about Pagid but maybe that's the more expensive pads?
The only Brembo I've found are the 'sport pads' for £80-100. No idea whether they are the 'OE aftermarket' mentioned. Similarly, are these likely to be a big upgrade from standard?

Think I might ask about the DS Performance (2000) as a compromise of knowing I will get a decent upgrade without going to quite the same expense.

Finally, is there any need to replace front and rear at the same time?

Thanks again.

Definitely recommend the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance tyres - very good grip in all conditions and they are wearing well. I've done about 3k on mine and they still have pretty much full tread left :)

Standard pads on rear are fine
DS2500 or Mintex 1144 for the front if you want any sort of upgrade and you drive hard.
Although Pagid from Euro car parts will be fine for most normal road stuff.
Change the brake fluid, it might still be the original and it will really improve the feel.

If you drive normally, any big brand tyre will be fine, as long as the ratings are C or above. Look for something with good wet grip though. If you normally drive harder most of the time, then you’ll need something better and probably away from the normal manufactures that kwikfit sell.

Good to see you're happy with the EfficientGrip Performance. I assume they are W rated? Did you go for XL?

Interesting comment regards the pads, I did wonder whether any middle-ground pads were going to be worth it. Although I don't drive it particularly hard most of the time, I would like to try something better. I've since read mixed things about the DS Performance so I'll skip those.

Well SEAT and REVO customer services haven't covered themselves in glory with their lack of responses to emails :(

Was all set to go with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance but they're now out of stock until at least the middle of June (BlackCircles), so I've had to 'make do' with Eagle F1 Asym. 2 :D

I was hoping someone could enlighten me with regard to remap settings as I'm in a sub-optimal position. I intend running V-Power or equivalents post remap to get the biggest benefit of the map and because I believe the improvement over 95 RON is greater than when standard.

Unfortunately, the car has been running on standard Shell recently (95 RON?) and there isn't time to use the fuel and replace it.

My understanding is that a generic map goes on, then some tweaks are made to timing and boost to fine-tune during a road test.

Is there a different 'generic' for fuel type? Can I request set-up for higher octane even thought it doesn't currently have it in? Presumably this is going to make fine tuning impossible?!

If it were set up for 95 RON (and tweaked), would I be able to switch it with SPS to run optimally on V-Power? I'd have thought the settings made during the road-test would be less than ideal or are they not fuel dependent?

What's the best way forward?

As an aside, I was thinking about asking for the linear throttle map. Any reason this would be a bad idea?

TIA.

revo map is generic. there isn't too much they will be adjusting.

an sps will allow adjustment of timing and boost.
all it will mean running 95 ron is you will have slightly less aggressive timing and boost settings.

then when you do get 99 ron you can increase the timing setting to suit.
However, will you really commit to 99 ron

decent 95 ron set up correctly will be as good as someone running 99 and guessing settngs. most people are too aggressive with settings, often less is more

Thanks for the reply. Answering your question first about committing to 98/99 RON, I'm not sure I need to. Reading the advanced user guide, my interpretation is below. I assume I'll have modes PM1/PM2 and/or A/B to select between for the fuel as required.

PM1 and PM2 will contain REVO defaults for 95 and 98 RON respectively. The dealer will set up another mode (A) based on one of these by adjusting the timing and boost.

For the sake of argument, let's say that 95 RON is the base mode. The timing range is then [0,3]. I get the impression that 0 is stock, so a remap would use [1,3]. I'm guessing that the REVO default is in the middle, so the adjustment is +/- 1. The dealer can therefore set the boost level along with a minor alteration to the timing (or not).

First question, is the boost level set to optimise the vehicle or is it a matter of preference?

Let's say we now want to set up mode (B) for 97/98/99 RON. Now I'm assuming that the timing range is [4,6] and that the better fuel enables a higher boost setting to be used. With no logging available, is this a non-starter or do the PM1 deltas for mode (A) provide any useful information?

In know, short answer is, it needs to be logged and set with 98, which I can't do :-(

What are REVO's default boost and timing values for PM1 and PM2? What sort of difference are we talking about between these defaults and adjusted? Are they as wide as the automatic ECU adaption?

I suppose the settings aren't that critical since they will also vary with environment.

Good final point made about not guessing settings. You think it would be better to use >95 with the custom 95 mode or put it in to PM2?

I feel I've learnt more but it just means yet more questions!

Cheers.

settings are fairly aribrary without logging.

cars wear and tear is a contributor to how things respond settings wise.

do you have access to vcds to log stuff?

It will initially be set up using logging but I don't have logging facilities myself. May just have to go back in the future.
