Hey guys can anyone tell me how easy this is? I know how to get the door card off but not got the foggiest how to remove the metal skin to get to the back, tried winding my window back up today and heard a lot of grinding, upon taking the motor off the cables frayed and sticking out :(

Am guessing this is a common problem? If there's is anyone in the Oxford area that could give me a hand and show me how to do it there's beer tokens in it for you :)

Oh and the windows all the way down, what's the safest way to cover it up :)

to get the skin off, its either approx 8-10 10mm bolts, or if you are very unlucky its 8 very large rivets. if its the bolts, its possible to do at home. unfortunately im west mids... there is a post somewhere on the how to section

Cheers fella, I managed to get to it and had the 10 bolts, as the rear window was at the bottom I had to lever the window up till I could grab it and support it with loads of take and cardboard. Managed to get the regulator cable out and it's a little bit frayed :(

On replacing the regulator is there anything specific I need to watch out for?

Think the glass is clamped onto reg so ul need to drop the glass again slightly till you can see the two 10mm bolts on either a a white plastic clamp or metallic clamp. There may be a large round rubber grommet hiding them. Once bolts and clamps are loose then raise the glass and secure it. you'll need to remove door lock too as that is attached to reg on the metal skin. And you'll need a way to reseal the new metal skin. Think lee69 has a link to what you need.

Right I've been told I can remove the door skin without the need of removing the door lock, how is this done?

It's very difficult lots of wiggling and bending....

Buy the whole kit as its impossible to just add a new cable without the metal frame thing that holds each end of the white plastic windy bit :) u will see it in the full kit pictures

See my previous threads I'm sure I discussed it

Does seem that it's going to be a pig of a job lol! Am going to give it a go with the cable anyways, if it doesn't work I'll just run it to a mate to sort for me lol!

My problem is I'm hands on and would rather avoid paying a garage a silly amount of money when I can give it a go myself :D

What's the size of the triple square key bit to remove the lock bolts in the door shut area?

My wire was too long and was still impossible to connect up I managed to feed it through one of the sliders and used a screw to hold it hahaha funny thing is I did the wrong wire to the slide so now my sliders are not aligned and the glass needs pushing back slightly to close it!! But it does work

Lol hopefully I'll get it right, found a YouTube vid showing how it's all connected using the kit I have :)

What size bit did you use to get the bolts in the door shut off?

There's springs in the whole thing so you just get the cables on to the wheel then twist the wheel in a certain way to wind the cables on till it's tight then put it back in place for the motor. They're not that bad really. I actually like the set up and it certainly made my conversion to electric windows easier in a lot of ways.
Regarding the door lock, I've no idea why it's fixed to the door skin, I just drilled the plastic rivets out and left them unconnected. Most often the plastic thing gets busted anyway trying to take the rivets out properly.
Can't remember the size of torx bit though lol

Cheers fella, thankfully my kit comes with the spool prewound so I can just wire it up (need to remember to remove the cable tie attached though lol)

What do you mean by "I just drilled the plastic rivets out and left them unconnected" do you mean you drilled them out and left that cover off? Am going to go for it and do this today if it doesn't rain lol :D

The ones that join the door lock to the inner door skin, I drilled them out and left them, they seem pointless anyway and do nothing but make life harder lol.

And how exactly does that bit of useless plastic give any kind of support whatsoever? The lock is supported fine bolted to the door, firmly.

Lol well I got as far as that bit of plastic and the heavens opened :(

One of the plastic bits has snapped and the other side isn't budging (always the way with one side being easier than the other haha) but have disconnected all the wires and found a better way of supporting the window without using tape or a block of wood (when doing this job anyways)... Spring clamps and four squares of rubber :D

When relocating the window do the plastic clips have to be near the bottom of the mechanism or do I have to wind them up till I can see the bolts through the rubber grommets?

Cheers for all your help guys, am a lot happier now :D

nearer the top isn't it? The two big rubber grommets, remove them and you get to the clamp bolts through them. With the motor off you can push it up and down to suit.
