Hi all,
I am after a bit of guidance here, I have a MK2 Leon with a PD140 (BKD) engine. I recently started to intermittent niggles.

Last week whilst driving to work all of the warning lights lit up on the dash for about 3 seconds then vanished, I plugged in a fault code reader.... nothing.

Later last week after work I pulled up outside my house and the car was idling at around 1200rpm which is not normal for this engine, after switching it off and back on it had returned to normal.

This morning was the strangest, I parked the car at work and noticed that the engine was again idling at 1200rpm, I also noticed that on the digital display in the centre dash for the internal fan speed was missing (the blocks along the bottom), the fan was still running, the display was still showing the temperature output and where the air was being distributed but I could not adjust the fan speed?
I revved up the engine to around 2500rpm and all the warning lights lit up on the dash for a split second then turned off?!?!?!

I revved the engine up a few more time no lights came on but every time the idle returned to around the 1200rpm area. I switched the engine off and back on and the engine idle returned to normal and the fan control became available again.

:confused::confused::confused:

Battery is on the way out or the alternator is not charging correctly .

I've had this exact same problem. Idling at around 1100. Warning lights flashing up. Had me stumped. Me and a mate disconnected the battery and the earths and just cleaned them all up. Hasn't done it since. *touch wood*

Had a rusty earth in my Kia that showed some fairly strange behaviour for a while that later caused the car to fail to start completely. Worth checking.

I will have a dig around on the weekend to see what I can find.

The stereo (which is stock) started turning itself off earlier!!

I had that aswell. Then turned back on again. also when turning the car off all the electrics shut off then came back?

Yeah but if you turn the car off when the idle is high. Do the electrics shut off then come back. I've got a video of what mine did but not sure how to post it.

No, I don't get the run on from the electrics, but the rate things are going wrong I am sure it will be tomorrow!!
What did you do to cure the problem?

All I did was take the battery out. Use sandpaper to clean the terminals. Then undo the earths and do the same.

There were 2 I think. One just to the top right of the battery. and one to the front of the bay under where your air intake is.

No worries. I know how you feel. It's one of those problems that no one knew what was up. Got me so annoyed.

I have cleaned up all the negative terminals I could find in the engine bay and most of my electrical faults have gone away. One problem still exists and that is the idle being too high. Something I did notice was when the idle is too high both radiator fans are running?!?
