PD intake / EGR clogging

Here's a link to a TDIclub thread about PD intake clogging .... as you may know, US VW diesel owners worry about this a lot.

So far it doesn't seem to be as big a problem as feared ...

yes, the quality of their diesel over in the states has been improving thus they seem less likely to clog, this was the main reason they were so slow to get the PD engines in the first place.

I was amused to see an owner who used BP "Super" diesel with its cetane rating of NO LESS than 50

A while back I had the intake pipes apart on the Ibiza (the ones between the EGR and intercooler) and there wasn't the slightest trace of cack at all, just a thin coating of oil which is fairly normal.

Mind you I did disable the EGR quite early on by blocking the vac pipe...whether that's prevented any buildup I don't know.

any chance of a pic of the hose u blocked off , the only valve i know of is the anti shudder valve , looks like a brass shiny thing on the back of the engine on top, where is the hose in relation to this

Was about to say there were some photos in the TDI FAQ thread, but it seems all the photos have disappeared.

Anyway, IIRC the EGR valve is in the same housing as the antishudder valve. The EGR has a round silver top with a vac hose going into it. Pull the pipe off, stuff something up it that's tight fitting, pop the pipe back on, job's a goodun. I found the engine felt smoother at light throttle, low rpm driving as a result.

Probably a good idea to back the EGR off as far as it will go with vagcom, so it's not running to much differently to what it thinks

It's the one marked "EGR Valve" with a little yellow circle round it

i was always under the impression that was the anti shudder valve----starves the engine of air when u ignition off so it dies quickly n smoothly

They're both in the same housing as I recall, presume there must be a second hose somewhere underneath for the ASV.

BTW, that's no ordinary boost pipe next to the fuel filter, is it...

If you look behind & below the EGR valve, you'll see a little pushrod thingummy that turns the ASV.
In the photo, just below the EGR and left slightly in the same pipe, you'll see the end of the ASH shaft, which runs front-to-back in the car. It gets operated from the rear. If that makes any sense at all !

As part of the Allard conversion i had done on my cupra they remove the ERG valve completly, don`t ask me why but my engine switched off and on OK.

if you wish to remove the egr valve doNOT try to remove the pipe on the ASH valve diaphram cut it and rejoint or it WILL break the nipple off and they are not available seperately this info should really be a sticky

How true,,, I broke the nipple on the antishudder valve actuator and they wanted me to buy the whole EGR valve,,,
ended up repairing it by myself with glass resin and a nippled round plate coming from the N18/N75 communicator [the black and white thing].
If anyone needs pics/info on how to do this just ask,,, mine works a treat now.
