well popped into the garage to see how my clutch issue was going, turns out need a new box :( he said its a fairly common problem, and ive read a lot of information on here about it.

now im in no position to 'have a go' at fixing it myself, much rather leave it to the garage, but they've quoted me well over £300 for the part labour and vat

does that sound reasonable or am i being fobbed off?

mechanic says steering column and all sorts have to come out to get to it???

just like some rough confirmation before i call him tommorow to give the go ahead.

thanks lads

The pedal box and brake pedal clip are about 96 quid with the vat as ive just done one

It took me about 3 hrs to do and yes the column has to come out

Its not a bad job to do just really awkward as your working in a tight space

Over £300 does seem a bit excessive unless thats a main dealer

Thats steep!
Even at my local stealers i was quoted £250 all in to do it.
But ive just bought the pedal box from seat for £85, then found someone who will fit it for £60.
Going in tomorrow morning to be done.

well agreed on a price with the mechanics, cant believe theyre trying to fob me off, as they're a very helpful and pleasant bunch of chaps

£300 for pedal box clutch cable and bushes replacement and labour, and a new thermostat which was the other job i needed doing

so just gotta bite the bullet and cough up haha

its given me a few days without the car to plan the next few mods though
thinking cupra back box and vinyl wrap the roof black???

ok well after having my new car spent its first week of its new life with me in a garage for a cracked pedal box, a bill of over £500. I get the car back, 6 days later BANG clutch hits the floor and dosent come back up

please dont tell me this is the same problem or its gunna be ridiculous... very unhappy ben

I dont know, the garage recommended replacing it the first time, but im not paying for another bracket 2 weeks after i replaced another broken one. Its mad. Ill ask them to remove this one, source a replacement from seat free of charge under warranty, and before fitting it, if they could weld or bolt it.

Do i need to pay labour again or is the garages work warranted do you reckon?

Just get it welded up. If this is the problem you had before then you should have just got it welded up then as if you replace it with a new part from Seat it has the same weak weld on it so will just break again be it the next day or years later. Even on the new ones or when people havent had this problem they get it welded to stop it happening in future.

As PJ said above, have your current one welded.

Mine has been done.

No point buying a new box as they haven't rectified the weld problem (unless you get it strengthened before it gets fitted).

Anyone know what position Im gunna be in with the garage? am I liable to pay the labour costs again, despite it only being in a week or so ago. If i get the current box welded and strengthened up, can i claim the cost of the new box from SEAT as would it be under a parts warranty?

regards

I bought a new box from seat and on the invoice said something along the lines nearly all parts are under a 2 year warranty. So they may replace the box? but as for the labour for doing it? i dont know where you would stand.
Another thing to bear in mind is, the bloke who did mine said it snaps not only because the weldings a load of sh*t. But because of a underlying issue. I.e the clutch or clutch cable?
If youve had the cable done like you say? Then maybe you should look at the pricing for a new clutch?

Surely my contract is with the garage to fix a fault with my car, so if they fitted faulty parts or for whatever reason the problem isn't fixed, I shouldn't have to pay out any more labour should I?

And if given the choice, should I accept another brand new box, or ask him to fit the old box which in the meantime I can get welded up and bolted/strengthened?

I think it depends on the garage really. But i think if you can get seat to replace it with another new one, then get the new one strengthed would probably be the best bet?

The garage havent fitted a faulty part. It sjust how Seat make them. Get the one you have currently in the car welded up. It takes all of 5mins. Its no big deal, just get it welded up and forget about it. The garage has done nothing wrong and theres no point getting another one from Seat as it is them who have the warranty on the parts as itll cost you again for fitment when theres nothing really wrong with the one you have already in there apart from the weak weld.

But isnt there a fair amount of labour to pay in taking it back out to have welded and put back in?
Ive dropped an older broken box in to a local welders to see what he can do, but my problem is I can't afford the labour to replace the box yet again, cost nearly half the value of the car the first time round :(

who did you get to weld yours pj? i see your in hampshire i could go and make a trip. The garage are replaceing it with a brand new box again foc. so i will let them fix it and take it straight to a welders and get it strengthened up a bit i reckon

Mine was going to be welded in place, but i opted for a new box.
Glad i did because it'd snapped in 3 places. 2 of which you couldnt see where it was.
And out of about 9 garages. Only 1 would attempt it, reason being the masses of wires where it was.
