I'm 22 and I pay £750 on my cupra 280. Thinking about swapping to a golf R and ordering a new one means I have to have a car if I sell mine privately so have been looking at insurance on a 2006 Suzuki alto 1l. Insurance? £650. The power and car honestly make very little difference to insurance, it's all about crash statistics. More crashed alto'a than cupra's. only thing I will say is, the cupra being fwd, it's **** in the wet. And if you mash the accelerator in the dry from stop, you'll get spin and wheel hop. Hence the switch to 4WD and a slightly more plush interior. ive done 12k this year, and I get around 25mpg round town, 30-38 on the motorway between 50-80mph :). Also running a dtuk box so running @ 350bhp

I currently drive a 120bhp 1.4 turbo corsa, I think the jump to 280/290 scares me. I'm on £1200 p/a insurance currently but I'll be 2 years no claims and 22 in a few months

Don't let the power scare you. I went from a 1.2 polo 52 plate @ 60bhp to a 180bhp polo gti (had it for 6 months) to the cupra. As long as you have self control and are sensible, power doesn't matter. There are times and places, just remember that. Been driving 5 years now and I have no points (speed awareness though....which I got in a Mazda 2 hire car not paying attention :D

Its not my ability to drive that concerns me it's an over active right foot and an easily accelerating car, that's what drew me to the golf/Leon/A3/1 series region of cars that 7 second area. Never had any kind of ticket for anything though, I'll consider the cupra would just have to convince the parents and mrs that I won't mash my face on a wall

That's why I'm sat on the fence. I do weekly long journeys, enough to give a Diesel engine the blast it needs to keep it 'clean' then the rest of the week is short journeys to and from work. So I guess there's pros and cons for each.

I was similar before I moved house- my journey to work was a 6 mile round trip mon-fri, but at the weekend I'd usually do a 150-200 mile round trip either to my parent's or girlfriends. Had a 2.0 diesel Ibiza FR and then the Leon FR+ before getting the Mk3 184 in Feb this year.

Now I do a 130 mile round trip twice a week for work (and the other 3 days I work from home so do the odd trip to town)

My current situation is identical to that, 8 mile round to work, 88 to my girlfriends and back so 196 if she comes here and goes back, the girlfriend situation changes and that's 300-800 miles a month gone. Might just ask her if she plans on breaking up with me in the next few years as it's crucial to my new car, see how that goes down

When I was looking at cars a 280 cupra was 220 a year , I'm in a 184 golf that's 260 a year, did quote on confused site and also aviva

That's a good price £220. When I insured my TT in May I paid £329 when I bought the 290 in July I had to find an additional £35
