Philips X-Treme bulbs

These X-Treme bulbs sound very interesting and I think I could be pretty tempted to invest in some.

The bit that I'm not au-fait with is the terminology such as H7. Is this a particular spec of connector or something?

Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of what H-numbers (presuming that there is such a thing as an H-number) are used on the Altea XL?

They are a pig to fit mind you on the Altea as indeed most these days, so expect lots of fumbling inside the engine bay with no chance of seeing what you are doing unless you use a torch and mirror. If possible swing it onto soeone else.

TBH I thought these were quite easy to fit:D, though im an aircraft technician by trade so im used to fiddly stuff.

A friend has a reanalt megan & he told me he had to take the wheel arch liners out to get at the bulbs on his car. So im thinking maybe the Altea aint so bad.

I got my brother to do it since he prides himself on being capable of all things motoring. Father was a flight engineer in the war and use to fly Catalinas in South Asia on the mail route, plus dropping off one or two S people in the night and clearing up Japs after the war off the islands, changing the engines and making the tea for the captain on board were the duties between Ceylon and Indonesia.

Bulbs... it's all done by feel on the Altea unless you start to take stuff out. There is a knack which is either pull the clip off the bulb first, then the plug or the other way round, but if you take the clip or plug off first since you can't see what you are doing then your up that place without a paddle. The mirror and torch come in to see what you are doing just for rough geograph. My brother said now you do one... I got it backwards.

That's if you got a camera phone [luddite as I am with phones], my brother jokingly bought me a headband light for next time.... not sure where I put it.

Try looking up.

Actually the H7s (Dipped beam) are not too bad to fit, its the H1 (Full beam) that require you to have 12 inch multijointed, pencil-thin rubber fingers...
And the parking lights are virtually impossible to change too.

For the record, the only other 'H Number' you need to know is H3 - thats the fog lamp bulb.

On the subject of speakers, I am strongly considering the Infinity speaker upgrade. Strangely enough, I have more or less figured out that my rear tweeters never worked - or at least have no visible wiring going up to them from behind the main cones. And the main cones in the rear doors are of the paper 'dual cone' design which supports the theory that rear tweeters were not intended to work, unlike the front main cones which are paper single cones (woofers) designed to work with external tweeters. In fact, maybe there are no rear tweeters there at all behind the grilles ??:headhurt:

Interesting perhaps they never put tweeters in the Toledos which I you have from memory. If they are dual cone then and there is not loop wire going back up then you are right :). Like you only have two wires going into the socket, if it's four etc and so forth. What you do is you don't connect them but cutting the wire which comes with the speaker adaptor kit that you hack, cue for someone to say you don't have to do this now [but do you get the free sockets and wires thrown in, so the only wires you cut are the ones you bought not the car ones and don't have to mess with the car wires either since you just move the plug over].

I reckon Infinity speakers are good myself and it's a respectable headend in the car even thou Seat messes it up with the crap speakers they fit for cheapness. Somewhere along the line the quality control of the audio side of Seat went wrong since they match decent headends to crap speakers.

You don't need the tweeters at ear level least if the back ones are going with the front ones and as was said three years back the cost of getting at the inbuilt tweeters to change them is high since you have to take the door apart. I don't think any one had done it on here, if they have they are keeping mum about it and that is hard to believe.

Hey up!

Are these bulbs road legal, and also whats the life expectancy, I remember putting some blue blubs on my leon and they blew after a couple of weeks, chavtastic I know, but ended up going back to standard blubs after this, and im a bit twitchy about changing in the altea (cause im fatter now)

Has anyone tested them in the Altea, as I have a service coming up soon and will get them to change all the blubs to these flashy ones.

Fully road legal, they are normal 60W bulbs. Philips product, so life should be good.

As for testing them in the Altea, isn't the Toledo and Altea the exact same car ??

Whenever you change bulbs ensure you do not touch the glass with you fingers as the residue on your fingers will leave a mark which creates a hot spot on the bulb causing the bulb to blow pretty quickly. I have fitted upgraded bulbs in most of my cars and have never had any problems with bulb life. If you do accidently touch the glass you need to clean it with IPA to remove the residue. You could of course have just had a faulty batch but these bulbs are usually very well made.

I have just fitted a pair of Philips X-Treme bulbs to my Altea XL, but they seemed to be pointing to far down and the throw is not good (very bright though), I have checked the setting with dial on the dash, and this just makes it worse, the higher the number the lesser the throw. After changing bulbs (dipped beam), do I need to get them adjusted by a garage? Have I messed up the setting by changing the bulbs.

I didn't get mine re-adjusted although it is said that if you are a bit physical when doing it you can move stuff around out of allignment [mind you I got my brother to fit them for me :)]. May be yours were not alligned in the first place so you just got more light pointing at the ground as you say. I'd get them checked out if you are not happy.

I keep mine set to zero so they are fully pointing up the road but clearly after an MOT the garage guys will start playing around with the allignment in any case.
