Plastic bag sucked into engine...

Hi guys,

I have a 1.9 tdi FR.
So today when fitting my new Intercooler I got distracted half way through, so I let my car roll forward a little towards the garage. The pipe from the intercooler to the intake manifold was disconnected at the intercooler and was left hanging on the floor. After my distraction I moved the car backwards however the plastic bag I was using to put some parts on top of got sucked into the intake.
No other parts but the tesco plastic bag were sucked up.
I traced the bag all the way back to the inlet ports where I found about a 1/4 of it hanging out. Presumably 3/4 of it have been taken into the engine etc.

I turned the engine off as soon as I realised that it wasn't running right, and I know I shouldn't of even started it with no turbo pipes attached but I was only moving it back 2 foot.

I'm just wondering what damage this might of caused? I'm thinking it will be a head off job to remove any bits of plastic bag, even though they are likely burnt up by now, however I still have to remove the remainder that I can see poking out.

Stupid mistake and I'm hating myself for it right now any ideas on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Err yea thats a good one :s

Could have also got through the engine, into the turbo, the EGR system etc etc.
Ideally probably does need a full strip down, clean up and rebuild.

or see what the price for a replacement engines going to be, and just chance your arm that the bag will burn up before it causes any damage??

Yeah I know, not the best thing in the world! Think the head will get taken off and cleaned out.

Hoping so. Got a couple of mates who work in garages and I don't mind getting my hands dirty... Or as it happens breaking stuff. Worth a go I guess

Just run it.

Its a plastic bag vs lots of tough metal! If it went in the inlet it wouldn't go anywhere near your turbo.

It'll just shoot out the exhaust!

Still has to go through the hot side of the turbo though doesn't it? Going to hand crank it to open the valves up and see if I can pull anymore through and if I get the majority of it out then I'll just try running it. To be honest the sort of plastic in those tesco bags would probably disintegrate under the pressure and heat.

Didn't go through the turbo, intercooler was disconnected, so straight into the inlet. Half of it is in the engine half of it is sticking out one of the inlet ports

Ok mate treating like a car in the workshop (mazda and citroen technician for 9 years) firstly and most annoyingly i would remove the exhaust manifold then remove the fuse/relay for the fuel pump to cut the fuel then crank it over anything in the cylinders will be forced out. Plz send me pics mate and i will be able to visualize it and help u as best as i can . U DO NOT want any heat/fuel mate it would be like melted cheese in your oven lol

Okay i will try and get a pic tomorrow. We are going to turn it over by hand to get the majority of the bag out then the rest should be okay to do like you've said. At the moment I'm guessing it's stuck by the inlet valves being closed
