today i got the car up on the ramps and took the exhaust off the turbo to clean the crud out of it.
this seems to have worked, but i noticed a small amount of play in the turbine on the exhaust side.a tiny amount, but i could definitely move it.i didn't want to try and tighten it in case i broke it,but i am concerned that any play in something spinning at the rate it does is not good at all.
IF this is the beginning of the end of the turbo,is there a way of just bolting on another that will improve performance, without changing too much ,and therefore costing me a fortune.

You can bolt on another bigger turbo easily enough but you will also need to get the car remapped. Then the clutch might start to slip so you best get an uprated one fitted plus a bigger FMIC to stop the bad heat soak you will start to have then fit.........:help:

thinking 130 or 150 bhp turbo, mapped.and not ragging the tits of it very often, just having the bollocks to get passed an HGV without any arse clenching moments.its the wife's car,but she's been used to a octy vrs with revo, heat soak was never an issue with that.
clutches are wear items, they wear at a rate similar to how you use the GO pedal ;)

it was side to side bren. you could wiggle it a very small amount.didn't try pushing or pulling.

there is a small bit of deflection as has been said, to allow the oil to fill the bearings

if its more like a tick/knock noise rather than proper sloppy play you got nowt to worry about

thanks for putting my mind at rest guys.My first hands on play with a turbo,so every days a school day. TA

not removed it yet,but soon i hope to(to fit a bigger one :D).going to clean it all out and blank off the egr when i get a of peace to myself.

And i swore this was her car and i wanted nothing to do with it.
