Hi guys, I bought a 2004 LCR from a chap on here Sunday just gone, I was in the know of the 2nd gear whine when I asked him to deliver the car some 140miles to me, we agreed its a fair way of buying a car blind, if the sellers prepared to drive it thus far, clearly has nothing to fear and would have faith in the car etc... I wasn't too worried about cosmetics, but engine i was, We discussed the gearbox whine & he spoke of it being the usual issue thst doesn't really get to a point of failure, you just have to live with the noise,

The car actually sounds like a bag of spanners and as ive not driven it anywhere really, Only today noticed just how awful it sounds, more grinding than whining??

I did a search and the o2M shim mod came up, I have ordered the parts praying I could rectify the noise...

I've just popped the inspection cover off to see if the shaft moves in and out, lone behold the undertray is FULL of box oil, the shaft bearing cover is missing! I have no idea if there'sa drop of fluid in there! Its too late to drain and refil etc...

I can't use the car not untill ive replaced the fluid (if any) and fitted my new cover.... Fuming!

Question? Testing the shaft movement, the larger outer circlip moves back and forth, the smaller inner clip and tube like shaft is tight, What one is the o2m going to shim? Small or large outer circlip??

Yes, but theres 2 clips, one is on the smaller shaft (10p sized roughly) and a large one right on the outer silver ring (tennis ball sized)

I watched the tutorial on YouTube, (if you can call it a tutorial) and the box was different looking, He removed the huge outer circlip?

It's the big one mate. Bit of a bitch to get to lock in once shims on but goes in the end.

Yes just watched it again and I am happy its the larger one, I will fit it tomorrow along with a fluid topup, Lets hope the box is cured..... I will report back

Fingers crossed mate. If you haven't got needle nose pliers you can do it with 2 flat head screw drivers to spread the clip open and onto the shaft. Sounds kinky lol

I didn't have the tools necessary and it completely took the piss for me lol after way too long I got angry and decided to bend the clip and try hammer it back into shape which did NOT work so I ended up ordering new clip also lol I have the part number handy if you do happen to go the same route as me ;)

The o2M hasn't rectified the issue - I have not actually driven it for a few days as the GF has been using it - So today I toppped up the gear oil, did the shim mod and test drove it, It grinds on decelleration rather than whines....

I am now looking to refurb the box fully as the car was sold to me buy a forum member with just a 'usual 2nd rear whine' Upon investigation the covers been off the main shaft bearing since I bought the car and starving the box of oil, its all weeped out,

I have asked him for some help from the seller, He point blank refused. I am so pissed as now the car is off the road & I will be £400+ in the red,

There are litterally NO HONEST sellers left I am sure!

There are honest sellers out there but if it was sold as seen you got no chance mate annoying but you was just unlucky I guess.

'Sold as seen' is irrelevant nowadays, private, 'cash' or trader sale. Goods purchased have to be fit for purpose / as described. Unfortunately you had a heads up about the noise.

Common decency disappears for some when £££s are involved. If you're not getting anywhere you do have his address............................
