Hi all,

Just noticed in the last week, that when I turn the engine off, it sort of runs on or shudders to a stop for 1 sec or so. Did a search, someone had mentioned that the throttle valve could be on its way out. I don't have any engine lights on at the moment, can the throttle valve be cleaned out, or once it starts to go, you have to replace it? engine is 2.0tdi 140.

Thanks,
Koush

Yip ur anti shudder valve (asv) or air throttle as some people call it, is sticking open. U can clean them with brake cleaner or wd40 or petrol etc. 50/50 chance of it fixing it, if motors a new valve req.

Ur fuel economy might be a bit poorer.

Valve cost around the £ 200 mark from a factors.

DIY job take about 20 mins.

Yep its below the EGR valve. I just replaced mine this morning. [:@] The part was more that £200 though

Good luck, hopefully that will cure it.
The failure is usually due to the fact the plastic gears break off from the motor that controls the flap. Replace is the only option then. £309 from TPS after trade discount.

U are all mad paying that kind of money. WWW.worldcarpart.co.UK do them. Search Audi/vw/seat. They cost 170 plus vat I think. Or there is a place I. Glasgow that sell them to the motor factors, they are about the same price.

If its buzzing, then it fuked.

Part number from worldcarparts.co.uk - 7.00688.06.0. This OS for the Leon fr 170 Bhp

Or PIERBURG 7.14393.16.0
PIERBURG 7.14393.11.0
PIERBURG 7.14393.26.0
For the Leon 140bhp tdi

These are again from worldcarparts.co.uk

Both parts are £ 178 in vat.

U should shop about before u spend £ 300 plus . That's some mark up the factors near u must be making if that's with trade discount.

I now these parts costs are true because I am on my third Leon tdi and I have had to buy 3 of them.

I've just checled, tps is a vw subsidury and is the same price as seat.

The seat part is made for them by pierburg, and that's what u get from worldcarparts.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I just found their website and with shipping it £185.00 inc, which is alot cheaper than my local factors. The only symtoms i have at the moment is lumpy idle and running on for about 1 sec after switching the ignition off, sometimes with a shudder. I'll check if the part is buzzing. I take it that you check for buzzing with the ignition on, but does the engine have to be running?

Open the bonnet whilst the engine is running, turn off engine and listen around about the egr /asv valve.

It should make a noise for a second then stop. That's normal, its the flap closing. If it buzzes for about 10 secs and stops its probly faulty.

U can also check it once uve REM it to clean it.

Get someone to operate the ign and u watch the valve, to see of its opening and closing.

Doesn't show up a fault code.

Hi,

This is what I have found so far. The flap stays in the verticle position, with engine running, when revved it did not move, just stayed in the verticle position, is that normal, is that classified as open? When engine is switched off, the flap still does not move, the buzzing noise stays for about 10sec and just before it stops the flap moves a little, but stays in the verticle position. Does that sound like the asv valve?

That's the asv valve. It should be open the whole time the engine is running then when u turn off ignition it should shut to smother the engine of air. Urs is stay in the vertical, which means its still open and the engine runs on for a second.

In other words ur valve is knackered.

It won't do any harm its just annoying, and u seem to lose mpg.

Glad to help. I'm glad u found the part for that price, because someone on the forum told me I was liar. Nobody on this post, it was a while ago.

Thanks for being the bearer of bad news lol. I'm wondering, if I'm getting 45-50 mpg at the moment, how much more can I get? I will order one up tomorrow, thanks for your help. Don't take it personally about someone calling you a liar, some people like just like to put others down to make themselves feel better when they have overpaid for the same part.

The valve in question can be bought from a reliable seller on Ebay here. Link.

As regards function, it stays open most of the time, and closes completely on engine shut down to stall the engine. Its secondary function is to part close when the EGR valve operates so that a vacuum is formed in the EGR system, pulling the exhaust gas into the intake.

Edit: If the valve fails completely and the motor burns out then it blows a fuse. This fuse also controls the air con fans, so your air con will stop working.

U prob won't get anymore mpg, but if u haven't already, buy the egr/boost pipe gasket from the dealers. It's an updated one that stops the stutter that These cars have, uve prob read about it here. If not just search for engine stutter. its about 2pounds.

Hope it works for u.

I don't take anything personally, I just laugh at people :rolleyes:that pay double.

Ross.
