Has anyone experienced a problem with the brake pedal going solid at high speeds before going back to normal and allowing the brakes to work? I was out lastnight and went to brake slightly before a bend(cant say what speed  ) , but the pedal pressed down slightly and was solid, there was nothing on the brakes. After about a second it went soft and worked as it should!?! Same thing happened again thismorning and is kinda worrying as it only takes that second for something to go very very wrong :( . Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?? Thanks Pete

Without checking, it could be your brake master cylinder. If the brake fluid is not circulating properly, this can cause a hard brake pedal.

Best get it into the garage then! :censored: It only had the 20k service a couple of weeks ago. Im just suprised something like that could happen with such low mileage! Anyway im sure it will be covered on waranty so no worries there!!
Cheers for the help guys! :worship:

Mine has done this.
ABS system was playing silly buggers..

Did u get it sorted bill or did it just stop doing it? Seems strange aswell that the lower the revs, the softer the brake pedal is!! is this normal??

Hmmm. low revs thing sound like a possible vacuum leak in your servo system. MK4 Golfs had a recall on a vacuum pipe for the servo as I remember.

Never fixed mine... ABS is coming off... I hate it.

Bumping this up from a very long time ago - this is exactly what my car is doing. I was advised at yesterday's service to replace front pads and discs, and also my rear discs as apparently they are badly corroded.

But could it be a servo or master cylinder problem instead? Surely the garage would have picked up on this?

Please help as I am really panicking now - I've had some scary incidents on motorways recently where there has been a delay in braking due to this 'hardness' and I really want to get it sorted.:help:

have had solid pedal from broken servo m/c on my mk4 golf previously. ball end on it had sheared and it would catch on the master cylinder at different positions and angles.. = no brakes.

my best guess
