Problems after belt replaced. 1.4 16v

Hi guys, i have recently had my Ibiza into a local garage for a full belt and water-pump change and ever since getting the car back I have had trouble getting it started.

It sometimes takes up to 3-4 attempts to start it and after starting im getting a very strong smell of petrol in the car. Could the belts being replaced have anything to do with my issue?

It is the 1.4 16V 75PS engine, any suggestions much appreciated as im totally lost on where to start looking.

Thanks Steven.

Could be that the toothed timing belt is a tooth out?

Could be that they disturbed something else whilst they were working on it.

Take it back and get them to double check the toothed belt timing.

I ask only because if it feels slightly down on power as well, I would suggest, as already mentioned, timing belt is incorrectly set (i.e one tooth out)

These engines run on very fine tolerances I can't see it running or even valve punching at a tooth out.
Tensioners must be set up correctly if its too slack it could have these effects.

I would take it back and tell them the issues. Only thing that could be effected is the aux belt, pulleys, coolant and belt covers. Not like the diesels which you remove fuel pipes etc.

thanks will get them to check over the tensioners, sounds like it could be something to do with them as when it starts the revs drop really low and then climb back up again. thanks

Hi guys, had the car down to the garage yesterday and they found what they believe to be the problem. A vacuum hose going to the engine has a hairline crack in in which is letting in air, they are fixing it tomorrow. Hopefully that will cure my problem. Thanks for the suggestions. Steven
