Proof you can get over 50mpg in the SE 1.4

For the first time ever, I've gotten over 50mpg on my way home!!! However, the advertised 60mpg is a load of horse poo.

How to:

1. Get green lights all the way home
2. Drive like a grandma who has artheritus in her ankles.
3. Stick to just under 40mph

But seriously, I got green lights all the way and fluttered the accelerator when I had too. Keep it under 1800rpm and you'll get over 50mpg..... Honestly, I'd rather stick to my average 41mpg and have a little fun when driving.

Ha, I could do that every day I take daughter's 1.4 S/C to work (not so good coming home though) - but, went away for the weekend a week ago and took wife's 2003MY Polo 1.4 SE with the BBY engine, drove a bit tourist style so that we (I) could see things (?) after two days and 255 miles run, tank average MPG was 52.2 and remaining range was 255 miles - true!

Edit:- that Polo is quite a lot heavier than the current 1.4 S/C.

When I drive like that my wife gets quite angry, I can get 34MPG in my B8 S4 as well, but not while having fun - though if you are commuting there is not meant to be any fun!

It's not too difficult haha, when I wanted to go in fuel saving mode Id put it on 35ish and cruise control all the way home. On the motorway I found you could average around 58mpg if you stuck around the 60mph mark

I got 53.6mpg over 50 miles between my parents and my house a couple of weeks ago, in the Cupras 1.4! Fairly real world roads, quite a few hills, and roundabouts and traffic lights dotted through the city traverse halfway through the drive. Usually get 34 on that same road during the daytime when theres stuff to be overtaken and roundabouts to hoon away from, surprising just how much more chilled the drive can be when the roads are empty and you can concentrate on economical driving!

Oh, also returning about 44mpg now I'm working in an office and commuting the slow back roads every day, I'm pretty wounded about having to misuse and underwork the Cupra like that! Don't worry though, it's still getting a good thrash at the weekends - 'sorry officer, I was blowing the accumulated soot from my exhaust, didn't realise I was going that fast'

This would make me worry if it wasn't being swapped for a new FR this weekend... I honestly don't think I drive that harsh considering I have a box in this car (which will NOT be the case in the FR!).

I guess I'll find out with the new car if it was just me or the car.

I can only dream of getting 50mpg! Over the 100 miles I've been getting 25.4mpg from my own calculations although I do mostly urban driving but I stick it into 5th gear at 35mph, there must be a better way to get better economy in an urban environment

Similar in my old 1.4se 50 was the best speed to cruise control at. It was a bit too slow for the motorway though so Id settle at 60.
In my 1.4TSI I find 65ish in 7th Gear is best for fuel consumption

You have a manual box though

I wouldnt say so, revs all the way to 7000 which is redline. Goes on to 8000.
Tons of pull, it's a brilliant little engine

Not all the time haha. I've only had it for a few weeks and it's my 1st car so I have a lot to learn but as I have said I stick it into 5th at 35mph and I try to coast as much as possible but I do tend to floor it quite a bit as I find it lacking low end torque and i enjoy it!

Being in a higher gear doesn't necessarily mean you're getting better fuel economy mate

I've got 53mpg on the trip computer and 55mpg based on the petrol pump (full to full but not the same pump) out of my 1.4 Toca.

On a long round trip I managed to get 450 miles out of a tank before the trip computer said 0 miles left (on refilling it I only got 41L into the tank I think averaged an 50ish mpg). It's nearly a 500mile trip and I reckon in the right conditions and if I took it easy I could do it on one tank.

What a sad old cnut I am...

how long is your drive home? type of roads etc? how often do you use the brake?

it may be that the journey time limits how far you can get with mpg..?

My new one is even worse but I'm thinking it's a combination of me going "aaaaaaand TURBO!" and it's new so it's not accurate yet.

My trip home from work is only 7 miles but I travel to Hull from Leeds on the motorway on a monthly basis and I usually only get 45mpg. I'm driving to London next week so I'll see how high I can get it then, it's not like there is anything better to do on the M1 besides play the "watch out for the speed cops".

I've been spec'ing up some cars to replace wife's old Polo and Ibiza FR 1.2TSI was one, as was FR Black 1.2TSI, what I had not considered was just how restrictive the options are on the FR Black, so although it has lovely alcantara seats, I had to give it a pass, now it is between a Ibiza FR 1.2 TSI 105 PS 5 speed 5 door with lots of desirable options, or a Polo SEL 1.2 TSI 110PS 6 speed 5 door with lots of desirable options, getting a bit pricey! Anyone had any luck using a broker for a factory order?
