putting louder speakers in ibiza

Right just been looking at other threads about upgrading the stereo speakers in a ibiza. I wanted to start a new thread cos i dont want to hi-jack anyone elses post.

Ive managed to wire a 12 JBL sub in the back by simply wiring the amp to the rear speakers and that seems to work fine. The sub however cuts out whn turned up too loud and the front/back speakers arnt really up to the job of being equally as loud as the sub.

I looked on the center console thing and noticed it says 4x20w speakers each channel and really i need to be aiming for 40/50w. Now i know i cant just wire up some louder speakers and run it off the standard HU as it'll probably fry the internal amp (atleast i fink that'll happen).

How can i wire them up without going through the hassle of buying a new HU and remounting it etc...?

My HU has a 'line converter' (i think) wired to the back, which converts all the speaker outputs to the relevent outputs needed to run front components, tweeters, 6x9's and a sub and amp. All works perfectly, even the balance and fade controls on the standard HU work with it all.

Mine was done by a audio installers, so probably best to take a wander into your local installers and ask them. My car (as are many others) is proof that it can be done.

you need a high level imputs on your amp and a converter to convert speaker wires into 2 phono leads, easy, you need another amp though to run your back speakers, my advise if you are going down this route

u will need 2 amps, 1 powerful one for your sub, with high level imputs on AND a output so you can then run a smaller amp off it to power your back speakers (which will need changing as they are pants, get some componants to fit in the oem fitment, just as loud as 6x9's)

See above about the speakers. Your amp cuting out on the sub is another problem, what sub and amp is it? links would be helpfull!

Sounds like your sub is drawing to mcuh current from the amp and putting it into protection mode, but more can be done when I ahve the specs of them!

New back speakers

Well, best place for speakers in my opinion is in the shelf in the back.

I've made my own, took me about 1½ day (now that I know how, I could prob do it 1 day). Its made so you cant see the speakers from outside, so they won't get stolen.

Here's a walkthrough:

You need 2 sets of plywood approx. 1,5 cm thick (this is heavy AND will never break or bend). You need special felt that will allow the sound to pass and has some stretching abilities. You need a padsaw (otherwise you'll never get it done). You'll need superglue on spray bottle. Protective grill for speakers.

Sure? Persoanlly the best [place for speakers is in the front afterall thats where you sit!

the only probelm with runing a set of 6X9's in the rear shelf i if you stick a sub in the boot it will sound crap as the air movement from the sub mess's up the 6X9's. to do it right you want a decent pair of components up front and then some more components in he rear quarter panels, then a sub and amp in the boot.

of course you put speakers in the front as well...

and no, the sub wont affect the 6x9's it all depends on how you rig it up and the channel setup... With a decent amp you will be able to fine tune loads from front to back and from the sub.

Of course it will, the sub uses the boots air space to create a bandpass box, the pressure in the boot puts to much pressure on the speakers cones of the 6x9's in the shelf causing them to play out of line.

Also there is not point having speakers in the back, the idea of a perfectly balanced car is to have the sound like there is a small band playing right in the middle of your dash board

Let me ask one thing, when you go to a music conert you dont face the back off the hall do you?

i;m with aron on the 6x9 in the shelf thing go to any serious ice forum and tell them you thoughts there anf they will tell you stright. its not about setting them up its about air movement, I do however think that a set of speakers in the rear does sound better, but with the fad towards the front as you said a band playing on the dash.

my last car had infinity components up front fibrgalsssed into the doors facing the driver and the tweeters pointing towards the driver and the windscreen(as sound waves bounce off glass)nthen 6X9's molded intot he rear quarter panels with the fad twards the front with 2 12" subs in the boot. But the boot with it being a couple was quite a sealed enclosure.

ok, I was a bit fast... I agree that the air pressure may f*ck up the 6x9's... But its not always the case.

It depends on the rest of the setup... If I was to allow the air pressure to flow into the rest of the car, it won't interfere much on the 6x9's.

And regarding the question about even using rear speakers its a question of taste... SQ-wise it will never hurt having more units placed all around the car.

But I know that a lot of people think the less is better... I don't agree

Less is normally better as it reduces the setup, the most simple setups are often the best in the world, i have experienced this first hand.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion and obviously it comes down to personal preference, if you think 6x9's sound good then great. Posrting the shelf doesnt work for me, i prefer to keep the bandpass style enclosure using the boot space to improve bass.

But as said i have experienced some of the best setups in the uk, SQ winning cars and have built a fair few instals (and im not talking about cheap dodgy ones you get at car audio shops!). From tried and tested methods the smilplest systems with just components up front and a sub in the back work the best 90% of the time!

I am sorry... My response was to the guy that wanted a simple upgrade (ie. without sub and amps).

Just upgrading the front speakers and adding 6x9's (in the shelf or whatever) will suffice for most "normal" people wanting to use their boot as well... So yeah, the shelf I made is for a non-sub installation...
