R32 to Cupra - Buying Advice

Hi

thinking of changing my MkIV R32 for Leon Cupra, going to test drive tomorrow
saw the car yesterday and dealer has come back with a fairly good deal, so its all down to the test drive. Got a few questions i hope you can answer for me

Car is 07 plate Inferi Black with delivery mileage - doesn't have any optional extras i would of liked Bluetooth option.

Can you tell me what options having the bluetooth give you over standard display on the on board computer(fuel, Mpg etc) I know there's the bigger display, anythig else?

also i do around 8000 miles per year(consisting of many short journeys of 5miles on A roads, my current car does 24mpg. Can i expect an improvment from the Cupra?

Should the Cupra be noticeably quicker than my R32 once its run in?

Lastly are owners with Inferi Black cupra's happy with their choice of colour?

bluetooth does give the bigger (and much, much better) mfd, it also has additional warning/iformation lamps (washer bottle empty, cruise...), also you can tailor convenience settings (central locking functions, mirrors, lighting, audible alarms...) (not sure the smaller display does as much)

i currently get over 30mpg. addmittedly i havent done too much spirited driving yet, however i had a thrash up to jedburgh and back on a roads (about 120 miles) and returned 28mpg. i drove it hard wherever i was able.

i dont know how quick your r32 is .

most infiri black owners love thier choice (otherwise they would have chosen another colour). i believe it needs plenty of washing though.

i am not regretting my choice one bit so far.

and by the way, as the dark nights are coming back i had my first real drive with the lights on the other night. bi-xenon - excellent, afs - makes excellent lighting even better :D.

with the mfd you can use the blueooth option preoperly: ie have you call details and phone book on the display. so you dont have to touch the phone :)

to be honest leon will feel quicker. but wont be much quicker really but ive driven the leon and they are good and now own a mk4 golf r32. i personally would keep the r32! the leon is good but things like traction lights coming on without pushing to hard and the lack of a really nice engine note swayed me away from it. good point nice interior but you will miss r32 seats. very good breaks nice styling better mpg!!!!! and more options like the blue tooth and things with it being new car

keep the r32, for me its the best golf what VW ever made, interier of the r32 is much better then in cupra and the noise is wonderful. For mods is better cupra, but r32 is r32!!!

From different perspectives...

Costs: You already have the R32 and will not lose much. New Cupra will hit you a bit in the wallet

Std Performance: R32 will be faster in std form and better round bends

Modded Performance: Cupra will be newer, lighter, cheaper to break +300hp

Looks: R32 does look nice, however I am keen on the Mk2 due to rarity and practicality.

My choice: Cupra due to a new turbo lump, no need for AWD, rarity factor

Your situation: Ask the sales guy to take you for a spirited drive. If this matches the R32 in stock form, then take the Cupra. If you plan on a remap or other mods, go for the cupra, as it will give better bang for buck than the R32. If you plan on staying std, stay with the cupra.

Any particular reason why you would think this:shrug:

Not having evo/autocar stats to hand and working from memory, cupra has recorded low 15 sec 0-100 runs compared to high 16sec runs for R32.

240bhp lighter FWD vs 240bhp heavier 4wd.

To me it doesn't take the brains of einstein as to what is quicker standard vs standard;)

Only scenario where i would imagine the R32 to be a little quicker is when its wet and the cupra is spinning its wheels. 0-30mph may be a little quicker in the golf also.

If it were the new R32 however vs the cupra, i'd choose the R32 :) Much nicer car :)

I read somewhere that the R32 was around the 265 hp mark. This may well be incorrect, but was used as the basis for my statement against 240hp for the Cupra.

With 4wd also providing a better start, assuming that the drivetrain loss was not enough to equal the power gap between the 2 cars.

I have not driven or raced one so have no basis for comparision apart from the above.

VB32, go for a Cupra. Go for a good thrash in one and then get back into yours back to back for a true comparison, then back into the Cupra once again.

I am biased as I think the Cupra is a great bit of kit, but you have to really give it some loud pedal in the car to appreciate the subtleness of the power delivery.

Just come back from test drive

Car only had 30miles on the clock so felt very tight and i didnt like to give it full revs(didnt seem right - esp as i could be buying the same car) also it was basic spec cupra with no extras like Bluetooth or convenience pack.

Cupra felt quick but car didnt seem to have the WOW factor esp when after test drive parked next to basic leon and wasnt much difference - cupra's looks seemed understated. Also the interior seemed lower quality esp coming from my R32 with full leather etc.

For the price its seems a very good car, id take it over a VXR or Megane. I think the option for me would be to keep my car and wait for a year for the Golf GTI Edtion 30 to come down in price, which offers the same engine but slightly better looks and interior(which justifies the higher price tag)

The Golf GTi 30 isn't the same engine as the Cupra by the way.

Golf GTi 30 is 230 PS (I think) they gave it 30 more (either BHP or PS) over the standard 200 PS (197 BHP) Golf GTi.

The 240 PS engine is unique to the Cupra and as far as I know isn't intended of use in any other VAG group cars in the future.

Not driven a GTi 30 but drove the standard one and it didn't blow me away like the Leon did. As soon as I sat in a Cupra in the showroom I knew it was the car for me. The Golf is too bland and overpriced.

It is unique to the S3 and Cupra....

The GTI Ed30, Cupra, and s3 engines are all 'unique' to each car. But basically they are the same engine with a different map.

correctamundo! which i assume is why cupra drivers get nearly 260 brake as standard, ala s3. :funk:.

vb32; unfortunately opinions are like ar$eholes, everyones got one.
yours is the only one that matters when its your money your spending. dont forget everyone on here is biased to whatever they drive, me included.

see if you can find another dealer tht has a cupra with a few more miles on the clock to see if you cant be persueded.
you can also always haggle for a factory order and spec it as you would want. i effectively got all my extras free and a few extra hundred quid off basic price.

road tax for the mk4 golf r32 isnt 400 a year its £210 the same as an ibiza cupra 20vt! the new leon would be the car hit with new tax regulations. but its still same price and band as the r32 mk4.
