For reasonable protection you need both a Radar/Laser Detector and a GPS `Safety Camera` locator
Radar Detectors are very useful for identifying which supermarkets/filling stations have automatic door operating devices - they are also very handy for identifing other more threatening sources of radar emissions sometimes encountered in the strangest of places in the course of your journey - often up to 1 mile ahead of you! - they perhaps allow you time to slow down and have a good look at the source emitting the signal as you pass it - sometimes you`ll find a gent in uniform, holding something that looks for all the world like a hairdrier:cop: - other times just one of those funny grey poles with a box on top - fascinating what you sometimes find:rolleyes:
They need practice to use to best advantage and effectively separate the `wheat from the chaff`
I`ve used Bel 550/Bel996 - both top class
My present favourite is Cheetah Sentinel - a really `natty little gadge`

www.speedcheetah.com

Laser Detectors are for the most part useful for tellng you just one thing - you`ve been `booked`
Once you hear the dectector alarm, then you say to yourself`Ah that white van was a camera van after all, and you just check your speedo,`cause there`s no time to do much else!:( - below the limit, and you live to play again - above the limit?:ban: - simple really!;)

GPS based `Safety Camera` locators are necessary beause the governening powers, desperate to find ever more cunning methods of separating you from your cash and your freedom, are now utilising devices which don`t emit Radar, like the boring old Gatso does - Truvelo uses physical contact withstrips in the road - SPECS is an `average speed` based system set up over a number of `loops` -In Scotland I think we have the longest in the land - 26miles - at least!!
Automatic Numberplate Recognition[ANPR} is now being implemented nationwide - your every journey is being monitored - and we have yet to see the Masterplan for Roadpricing which awaits us just over the horizon

As there is no Radar to detect from these latest family of devices, the only way to locate them is by positional coordinate data downloaded from the Locator Manufacturer`s web site on a regular basis and programmed into your GPS unit - I have used Road Angel and Origin B2 and both are really excellent
Any GPS locator no matter how `superdooper` is only as good at its database, for they need constant updating[for a monthly fee] to ensure their continued effectiveness

If you don`t go far, and you know the location of the Cameras in your own area, then you could get away with just using Radar/Laser detector for those` Emergency Situations`
However if you travel the country and often venture into unknown territory then the GPS unit is absolutely essential to preserve your sanity, and you financial wellbeing:confused: :banned:

Big Brother doesn`t really mind you having a GPS locator, but he is not happy about you having a Radar detector and whilst they are legal at the moment he plans to ban them if he can - Why? - because he wants to spy on you and remain undetected by you in the process of his doing so! - the unmarked Laser Vans are your most deadly enemy!!
Beware of taking your Radar Detector to France for instance - once spotted there it`s - `Go straight to jail,do not collect £200 do not pass `Go`[:@]

We in the UK are now the most `spied - upon` country in the world - the true nightmare of the Big Brother State creeping up on us closer and closer as it were, on a daily basis - if we continue to permit it to do so :rifle:

I agree with Songman on this one. I have a Snooper S6 Neo fitted to my Leon. The radar detector is fitted behind the bonnet and Snooper to a Brodit vent mount on the centre right hand air vent. The radar/laser detector picks up laser and mobile camera radars and the S6 unit is GPS based with a camera database which warns you of Specs, Gatso's, Truvelo's, Speedcurb's etc well in advance of you getting there. It also knows the speed limits on the road, the speed you are travelling so knows wether to warn you or let you go by.

Bit late but better late than never,

Ive got an Origin B2, its a GPS based unit but has an additional laser detector which you put behind the rear view mirror.

Its very good, warns you well in time, flashes like mad if your over the limit. Its got a nice display and is well layed out with all the info you ever need.

My only complaint is that its got the built in hazard warning thing. Which is a really nice touch. But it warns of schools in strange areas. For example.. going down the M3.

Can anyone shed any light on how it detectors lasers? surley if its detected the laser.. the laser has allreasdy hit you, so its too late anyway if your over hte limit?

As a general tool for warning of hazards and making you aware of your speed its great. Just to be alerted that your travelling through an area around a school is enough to make you more observant.

I think the Origina B2 is a bit pricey though. And havent used anything else to be able to compare it for value for money.

I just use a Tom Tom one with the camera locations addon. For £220 you get sat nav AND a speed cam detection system :)
