Go onto any insurance website, go through making a quote online and it gives you the cost for the insurance at the end. You don't have to be buying insurance to get a quote

Warwickshire once.
Try ringing around lots of different insurance companies.

Try elephant.

Try everywhere, if you spend 4 hours on a Saturday ringing round you will save yourself a fortune on insurance quotes at your age.

Each time tell them the insurance from the last quote was £100 cheaper, it will soon come down.

Bell.co.uk seems to be the cheapest if you have no no claims, remember to add your parents as named drivers and the price will come down loads, but you'll still be paying quite a lot, I got quoted over 2 grand for a 1.2 Corsa when I was 17!

I payed 2.8 grand on a 1.4 sport at 18 with 0 yrs NCB.

This year im paying 1200 on it at 19 with 1 yrs NCB and one non fault claim.

This is on a group 4 car.

I sorta wish for my first year I would have just bought the cheapest car to insure as possible, and then upgrade to something tastier when I had 1 yrs NCB.

It'll cost a FORTUNE bud! Im 19 and am on my car under my parents name (even though it's my car) and it's costing me a grand this way. And that's with 1years no claims and pass plus test.

www.moneysupermarket.com will help you. It's much better than confused.com and gocompare.com - gives cheaper results.

Things have changed alot since from when you were a young driver, especially on a SE London postcode. Couple guys here thought I wasnt trying hard enough to get insurance, then did a quote for a new driver with a SE postcode and saw that we are indeed getting bent over!

What happened to me was that I did a quote on a 1.4 seat in oct 06 and it was like 1600 grand to insure fully comp. However I love audi's so I went and a quote on a 2.0 FSI Sport A3 and it cost 3.5 grand fully comp to insure. So I saved up the 3.5 grand and got some more quotes around feb 07. Now all of a sudden all the insurance companies wanted 5.5 grand to insure me on the A3, so I was forced to get my 1.4 which all of a sudden most insurance companies wanted 3 grand for.

All of my mates are paying around the same as me. Alot of the insurance companies were saying before they raised the premiums at the end of 06 that they were not making money from the car insurance industry, and apparently 1 of ever 20 drivers in the UK is uninsured too. [:@]

If I was to insure my car illegally by going under my old mans name it would be really cheap but I cant bring myself to be fraudulent.

ChrWH your best bet is either the 1.2, 1.4 sport of the 1.9TDI 100. Get the TDI if you can afford the insurance on that.

agree the PD100 is going to be your best bet, when you can afford the isurance get a remap on it to take it past 130 spec.

It's illegal to buy a car with your own money and then get your parents name on the documents? So then it's classed as their car even though I paid for it? That's illegal?

In your book is it illegal to go through green lights aswell?!?!

Think i can help. I am 17 and just bought myself an ibiza sport 1.4, petrol think its 75HP. Thats pretty nippy for a first car and all ibizas look good fullstop. The sport comes with alloys as standard and you can get some good deals second hand, forget getting it new unless your loaded! I am insured by the RAC, car and insurance in my name nothing to do with my mum and dad and it costs me £1800 a year. Sounds expensive but im on a rapid bonus scheme so i get 1 years NCB after 9 months. That means its more like £1350 every 9 months but i also get 1 years NCB after 9 months so works out cheap. I think with a years NCB + pass plus it will be £700 (after 9 months) not bad if you ask me.

No its illegal because your telling the insurance company that your dad is the main driver, when actually the main driver is you, tricking them into thinking the risk that they are taking is actually lower than it really is.

Alot of insurance companies wont insure someone on a car that does not belong to them, especially if the owner of the vehicle is under 21. However you have by passed that by having ownership in your dads/mums name.

You are taking a risk, because if you do end up in a big smash up and they investigate your case chances are you will get found out and they will not pay out, and you will have a bad marker against you which will make it extremly expensive for you to get insurance in the future.

However I do not actually know anyone this has happened to as of yet, seems like the average young driver is insured under their parents name and its just the people who go onto the forums, and have read the articles as to why you should not do it, dont commit fraud.
