Rear camber tyre wear!

Hi All,

I'm new to posting but not new to the forum. I am a regular on UKMKIVS and I own a Bora. My partner has now bought a Mk4 Ibiza 130 TDI Sport.

Its in good condition but has bade tyre wear on the rear inside edges. The tyres have worn unevenly and give a bad ride as the tyres are not smooth.

I took it to my Micheldever tyres who have 4 wheel alignment and I was given a print out, He said it was within tolerances but the tyres could do with replacing.

My question is why have the tyres worn this way? I know the camber is not adjustable but I also read that others have had this problem, what's the answer. Should we just put new tyres on the back and see how it goes?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Luke

Good question, but no.

When we viewed the car the front tyres were shot so as part of the deal we had two new fronts fitted. On test drive I noted that there was a wheel bearing noise on the back. He got it checked out by the garage and they reported the bearings were ok and that it was tyre noise. I agree with them as the tread is so rough on the inside.

I think it can either be bushes, bent beam or axle stub. But with my google search I see many people complaining about this problem and I was wondering if there are any solutions.

I cant upload the picture of the alignment report because I dont have more than 15 posts atm so the details are as follows:

Rear:

Camber: Left 1.59
Right 1.41

Toe: Left 0.34
Right 0.14
Total 0.48

Thrust Angle 0.10

No, we were thinking of a 30mm drop but at the moment we will be leaving it as is.

It's probably just been dinked slightly in its' past, but probably not worth swapping out.

What do you think about the alignment report does it all look ok?

My main consern was to fit two new rear tyres and to see them wear out quickly.

I also have a few other things I need to look for:

Black smoke - possible boost leak?
Power stearing light ocassionaly on - Charge battery and check fluid level
There is no plug on the coolant bottle to give the low level warning, is this right?

Ibizas didnt get the coolant level sensors, see it as sporty weight saving measures!
Pretty much guaranteed the power steering will be the battery. The batteries have to be in really good condition especially when its cold because the steering pump uses a crazy amount of power and it takes a while for the alternator to catch up.

Thanks that's good to know, I removed the battery and all the trays etc to get to the power steering fluid bottle to check the level, and it was ok. However after looking at the battery I'm pretty sure its the original one which would be why it struggles to start the car.

I will get a new one in the week, along with new number plates and wipers, rear disks and a service kit.

Those readings from rear axle dont look bad but they are not perfect. I would like to know what the front is like because your current rear tyres could be at front before you bought it and then swap toback axle. When you check alignment, you need to look at the vehicle as the whole picture.

The rear tyres wernt on the front as the front tyres were worn and I had them replaced as part of the sale.

As usual, another alignment print out where they didnt bother with checking caster because they think its not adjustable. First problem is that your spread on camber is too big and subframe should be shifted to make it even. On top of that your rear beam have to much total toe in. Your left rear is leaning to much inside and have too much toe in. You can consder easy shims or different axle beam to fix that problem.

That would explain why you havehandling and tyre wear issues.

Allias, thank your for your reply.
I did look at:

camber shims: ebay.co.uk/itm/Eibach-Rear-Camber-Shims-Seat-Ibiza-02-07-/270601348879

Toe correction: whiteline.com.au/product_detail4.php?part_number=KCA310

Your signature says that your a suspension specialist, Is this a job you would consider taking on and if so where and how much?

I am very technically able but without the alignment equipment I can't help but feel that I would be stabbing in the dark.

I really appreciate your help so far

I work at place in Leeds which would be a long drive for you. I consider alignments and suspension setups as my huge passion. If you want to see few reviews about my work, then check briskoda, as there are few reviews about results on VAG cars. Search for ABC CAR Service.

As far as price... It would take up to 2 hours to set it and then adjustment. We would charge £60 for installing shims + shims + adjustment of front axle (£70) so you looking at £130 + shims. At this moment in time I can only do it on saturdays.
