It was passenger side rear in my 184 too. That is the side that hits all the potholes at the edge of the road I guess. I'm glad the Northampton dealer was happy to replace the dampers and top mounts on both sides to be sure. I guess it's a labour cost vs part cost thing, and to keep you happy so you come back to them for servicing.

I had a knocking noise from the rear on the driver side. Turned out to be some play in the locking mechanism for the rear seat. I fixed it with a bit of insulating tape wrapped round the locator on the seat to make it a tighter fit.

I was waiting for someone to mention the rear seat knocking noise. I've had two FR184's and both had this issue, releasing the seat and giving it a hard push back into place was the initial cure. Like yourself I ended up putting some electrical tape around the bar which did the trick.

I’ve got a lovely creaking sound on my 184 going over rough roads and speed bumps. No knocking, so not arsed atm. Last service noticed some light misting on one of the rear shocks, very common for age and model apparently. Probably just change out the bushings (maybe go poly) and springs when the shocks need changing. See if that makes any difference, but after reading this thread and related threads I doubt it 😂.

Creaking is probably a rubber bush somewhere, or could be an anti-roll bar drop link. I would avoid any poly bushes on a road car.
Light misting is 'acceptable' according to VAG!
Unless your car is sagging or the springs are very rusty or you want to change the ride height I wouldn't bother with new springs.

Good points mate, I was more thinking of maintaining it well for years to come. Need to keep this car going for as long as possible. Shocks and bushings when needed it is 👍
