Hi,

Recently my garage has taken a look at the rear tyres. Totally bald on inside.

The rear nearside shock absorber has blown also.

I've been quoted for a rear axle replacement (which isn't cheap). I would have though it could have been rear wheel alignment or bushing?

What's your opinion?

It does sound like that rear beam has been damaged at some time, so replacement will be part of the fix along with a full 4 wheel re-alignment.

There is no allowance to re-alignment the rear axle except maybe to fit wedges to the hubs, finding out what the root cause is and sorting it is a better idea which hopefully is what your garage is doing. What gets done with a full 4 wheel re-alignment is to initially check that the rear beam and rear wheels are "okay" with respect to the car's frame, then check and if necessary the front wheels to the fixed rear wheels.

Always a slight possibility though most people are replacing these items only to try to improve the stiffness of the rear end, for 90% of the cars these bushes are in for life.
