Reducing engine bay temperatures and heat soak

not sure about you guys but i noticed plenty of heatsoak on my car. At one point after 4 runs up the strip i felt my engine coer and it literally was to hot to touch.

My tuner said he wanted to turn down the boost ever so slightly to reduce the heat saok and maybe cancel it out a certain degree but i chose to remedy it myself after inters.

Not sure how it is on the boc, but on my fabia the intercooler to throttle body pipe (which needs to be the coolest part of the car) is literally millimetres away from the CAT on the downpipe which is the hottest part of the car, also the turbo being right at the front of the car at the top means you get one hell of alot of heat build up in the car, so not the best design in that respect.

Anyhow ive been looking at wrapping my exhaust in heat tape to contain the heat within the exhaust and then some reflective tape for the intercooler pipework.

Anyone here thought of it? seems like a relatively cheap mod

this is the exhaust tape im looking at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PROTEMP-Exhaust-Turbo-Heat-Wrap-10m-x-2-UK-Made-/180544422415?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D948515240152478907#ht_2594wt_905

and this for the intercooler pipes http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/THERMAL-VELOCITY-REFLECTIVE-HEAT-SHIELD-TAPE-40mm-x-10m-/260794477656?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb88fec58#ht_1963wt_905

have just bought two 1mx2" (4.99 each) rolls of reflective tape for the intercooler pipework and a 10m role of exhaust wrap (10.99). think it should work well actually

I'd say the exhaust wrap will make the difference.

Might be worth seeing if you can get a polyprop exhaust bush for the hanger incase it moves the heat too far along there.

i did alot of research into WMI on my octavia but decided to sell up. Im still keen on the idea. YOu will be able to inject post intercooler before the MAP sensor and get improvements.

I was thinking of maybe just the water injection for the fabia though purely as an intercooler substitute

Im not to clued up on how your engine bays are layed out but cant you make a sandwich plate to fit inbetween the tb and inlet manifold to house the nozzle.. totally removable then.

You really want to inject post throttle body as I have heard horror stories about them being screwed up..

not much room post throttle body. Not heard of many issues pre throttle body tbh, nearly all the WMI used on the TFSI is post IC and pre throttle body

Hmm, id rather play safe. the main reason that people fit it before the tb is that the vacuum in the inlet manifold can pull methanol through on idle. This is easily fixed with a better 1way valve.

You want to make sure the nozzle is fitted in a good secure point (i.e. not in a silicone hose) as it will not atomize correctly and just flood out.

I dont see why a welded lug onto a boost pipe would cause any problems for you though.

Oh and the AEM kit is the one you want to go for, all the others are prone to failure and thats the last thing you want when you have dialed in a load of timing!!

wouldnt use it on this for power gain tbh, mainly as the missus drives it more than me, and im away alot so couldnt trust her to top it up all the time. hence why im thinking water injection only for it

Fair enough, still a really good mod just for the boost cooling. You would be able to advance the timing just running water, but as you said you dont want it for the power gains!

you could also remove some of the plastic covering the IC at the front of the car. I took most of mine off and it helped a fair bit.

I'm sure I read about a bloke with a Golf 1.4TSi cutting away a lot of the plastic around the skinny intercooler and then blocking off some gaps to force more air to hit the IC. It probably wont make any massive gains but it was free and could help a little. Other than that I like VRSy's ideas as well as adding the twinter cooler.
