yes they are illegal, its just how wanky the copper is that might pull you,

if you put them on dont have the D on as seat is spanish, so you would need the E or just leave blank.

i got pressed plates with my private one, but with UK banding and UK font.

Spoken to traffic cops many a time and they actually like them as they follow guidelines and not german font and german banded.

So, you can get them pressed but with UK font and you'll be fine, if u want a pic just ask

Funny this, I was reading it earlier...

I guess its luck of the draw.... I had White/Yellow plates with a D banding on my polo for about 20months, Thought I'd step it up a notch and get some with hyphens, the D banding, Stadt stickers and run both on white. Went for about 6months or so without a wink from police. So I get the Ibiza, thought I'd do the mature thing and just get some plain white/yellow plates. Only thing to point them out is the font.

Tonight I get shouted at by a policeman for having metal plates.... WHAT THE ****!!? I've had them on there less than 2 weeks... well, 2 weeks today to be precise, and I've used my car noway NEAR as much as my polo.... how does that work!?!!?

just luck really mate, depends on what mood their in or how bored they are. I've been stopped twice and nothing said about the D banding, where as my friend has the plastic ones but different font and hes been told twice about it.

...or maybe their cracking down hard on it coz its getting common?
