Yeah, just read through the different write ups and faq's etc, all say the right things but no one posts the bad stuff. Saw this:
Why we don't offer ECU remapping For £150!
We get asked all the time, "why do some tuners charge as little as £150?" There are a few factors as to why we do not offer remapping for £100-£200!… Simply because we do not supply or the cars with standard off the shelf tuning files, but custom write them every time so you have the quality you deserve.
How do they custom write for each car without doing a dyno run?

Going to email the owner direct and put all the above to him to see what he says. If he wants the business I'm sure he'll reply.
My mate says that he reads the current map to a laptop via obd, adjusts the software for that map, rewrites the file to the ECU which takes up to an hour. Then spends at least 20 min adjusting the map for the vehicle.
He also says that all the reviews shown online are genuine as they are on an independent site not controlled by jfa, which is one good thing.

I had a giac map on my 140pd.. loved it. Turbo blew at over 90k but might have been a little low in oil and heavy footed before temps were up. Car was about 165 stock and about 185 with the map.
No clutch issues at all.. had the car 8 years and mapped for must have been 5 or 6 of those. Boost guage showed boost settles at 1.5bar spiking to 2.0 bar when changing gear.

A custom map takes longer than 20 minutes, at most it will be a tweak to boost control or WOT fuelling
Sounds like typical generic bull$hit to me. Got one in Cardiff, offers mapping from £150, or £180 for tri-core (you should see the soldering iron he uses!!)
I questioned how can he write a custom map without a Dyno or without data logging, and all i got back were typical' i write my own maps, they're bespoke, all custom, nothing generic... blah blah blah.. I since found out hes a mate of a mate, and quite simply invested in a franchise, did a training course, and doesnt have the slightest clue about custom mapping a car. All he does is read the file, send it off to be modified (typical whack fuel & boost up 20%)
Moral of the story, either go custom to someone who knows what theyre doing, or if generic go with someone like Revo who do a little more than just 'turn the boost up'

Ive asked all these questions in my email so hopefully will get a response. I even asked about the reputation of viezu and chipped uk. Cos he is so local I offered to go up and watch someone's car be mapped so he can show me exactly what he does to convince me he knows his stuff. Although not my intention he'll probably be a bit insulted cos all these questions and I originally asked for a discount cos hes a mate of a mate. I'll update when I get a response.
Still shocked no one local has given any feedback of their own mapping experience. We cant all have standard cars

So the million dollar question is, how do I know which ones do it right. And what other file producers are recommended.
I'd also recommend anyone who uses files from Oscarli, he is one of the only people I know who actually writes his own files, very good ones at that especially those for tdi's.
Find a local Revo dealerI wouldn't know what companies you have nearby to recommend any.
I know of a very good TDI mapper in West London/Windsor area, or More-Bhp offer a decent file only service

MJ, I've read somewhere on here that you can do just about anything with VAG COM, and you also de remaps. That may have been old posts but are you still doing this?
I only have the small MFD so can't change any settings, like seat belt warning, so annoying, was just going to pull the wires out!

So jfa have replied to my email, which was good of them as they could have been insulted by the questions I asked. They state that all work is completed in house, they do not use any outside companies.
They offer 4 types of map, economy, blend, performance and race.
All maps are written from scratch and NOT from a generic database bought in from someone else.
They state that once written most files these days can be placed on multiple vehicles of the same model, I.e pd140 bkd, as standard they will only vary around 2-4bhp so a map developed on one car can be added to another and tweaked if necessary.
They state that there is generally no need to dyno/data log each vehicle as the maps will be good enough and all cars will be checked for faults first.
If a truly custom map is required they can offer this facility, providing a rolling road run before and after with tweaks in between if required to gain extra power or iron out flat spots. This is around 100 extra.
They state either way their maps are safe and they know how to write software, as software development is their main business and they do it every day for a living and now have dealers in Uk, USA and Australia.
They state that they were not trained by Viezu and although they used to have an association with them as a business they are no longer linked to them in anyway.
Overall they state that they will be willing to do either a normal OBD map or rolling road map, all of which will be tuned on the side of safety with reliability being the important factor. They will not overtune to keep a customer happy.
They have stated that they will be more willing to show me my map once its written and explain more about the differences between it and the manufacturers map.

There is every need to log after a map, especially on a tdi which are prone to VNT mechanisms seizing, and on the PD140 lump which isn't known for a strong reliable turbo once mapped.
I would look elsewhere, or if happy with a generic file and you can run logs to check all is ok I'd buy my own file from a reputable file supplier, but that's me.
