awrite, i was wondering what exactly a remap does to your motor in terms of what the garage adds to your motor. is it just a software update? is there no hardware added? the 2 choices are between revo and jabba, also would one give more torque than the other? - from what i read i gather the differences between these 2 are minimal

do u need to tell your insurance about a remap?

cheers

strictly speaking yes you do have to tell the insurance company, id be surprised if anyone has as its impossible to detect its been done, especially if you have revo and switch it back to stock with an sps3

Only software is added when the remap is done. Most people will upgrade the diverter valve, as the stock one is plastic and tends to go pop with the extra boost. Also some people upgrade the filter to a performance filter at the same time.
Don't know the differences between the two, sorry. I'm not sure, but AMD also tune VAG cars, and JBS have created there own Custom code which is meant to be very good, so there are some other options to look at.

nothing added to ur car just a laptop a cable plug in few tweeks on th laptop for the setting 10mins latter ur done, not much difference between th 2 u named it went with revo as there local distubitor was closer to me

As CupraSteve said you should technically tell your insurance company, but then if you don't there's also the chance that if you have an accident they are perfectly within their rights to invalidate your insurance and refuse to pay out.

How would you feel if someone hit you and their company refused to pay out because they hadn't declared their mods?

Oh and I say go for Revo. ;)

I had the Upsolute on a Golf GTi turbo - £305 fitted - very smooth, extra 45bhp and felt great.
Last car i had was a fabia VRS (diesel) which i had the Jabba remap done - very smooth (felt factory smooth) and a lot more torque.
This car now Leon Cupra has had the Revo fitted - hmm, not smooth when coming on boost (jerky) and doesn't have the same grunt as the Golf with Upsolute - hope it's the N75 which i'm going to change

i heard seat europe fit revos as standard or an extra option fully guarenteed by seat but not in uk. so must go good with cupras

theres no way an insurance company would be able to tell its been remapped, specially if u turned it off, if a dealer cant tell, and insurance company wont, and even if u cant turn it off, the only way of telling is by driving it and when it comes to insurance inspectors looking at the car 9/10 its undrivable anyway as they only tend to bother on the serious prangs

Hasn't this been covered before? I thought remaps were NOT invisible. I'd imagine if you mowed over some kids on their way to school: a/ They would search hard to find a source of blame. Insurance aren't daft; they know what a 1.8T can do and b/ you'd feel a bit guilty wouldn't you?

i doubt theres many insurance inspector with in depth knowledge of ecu mapping lol, i doubt theyve even got the equipment to find out anyway, i really cant see them taken a wreck of a car down the road with vagcom plugged in checking boost levels to see if it peaks higher than std

It all depends whether you`re happy to risk it. I believe insurers have to pay out to third parties, but if they can find it, you get nothing as it would invalidate your policy.

Recently had revo put on my LC. Figures quoted take bhp from 180-207, so got some quotes off a few companies declaring 10% as my power increase, with direct line being the cheapest. Once i`d got a 10% discount cause the missus has a policy with them, it was only about £10 more expensive than my current insurer so i`ve changed the insurance for peace of mind. (Granted i`m 27 with 5 years no claims so that helps)

if your happy to pay extra then fair enough, nothing wrong with that, but i dont see the point, specially as i can turn it back to stock anyway

Interesting debate

I was thinking of asking about insurance too. Perhaps we could have an anonymous poll, "do you declare your remap to insurance"?

But I bet the more "extensive" modders declare it anyway coz it's obvious with all the other mods that they're after more power!

Suppose if you ran totally stock apart from remap you could get away with it, but I'm thinking that even minor mods like just a Forge DV may "flag" you as a modder to the insurance co and make them dig a bit deeper?

Personally I'll probably declare mine (when I finally get it done!) Less hassle in the long run. You never know when/where or how bad an accident you're going to be in. Are you going to stay cool enough in the heat of the moment, possibly in shock, to whip out your SPS and go through the switching process? You might not even get a chance if you're stuck in the middle of a motorway, and assuming you're carrying an SPS around for just this situation, what happens when you forget and Mr insurance finds it in your car?

Personal risk decision of course, but that's my £0.02

Have you told Direct Line about the uprated Dump Valve or the Non-Standard Alloys - Your insurance may be invalidated if not !! :-o

Direct Line are very strict with MODS - I know cos I work for em !!

this insurance thing is all upto u, i had my rs turbo crahsed and needed insurance work (th rs in my sig) as u can see was extensively modded but bein stupid i dint declare anyhing this had 17" alloys massive cosworth brakes lowered all round chrome engine, stg 2 turbo, chip, cam, pulleys blah blah an the insurance inspector said oh this is a nice example is it limited edition with those extras on it i said yes sir it is lol, but i think id declare most mods now but not d/v air filter or remap really
