Common fault I presume? Have had the same issues ever since I bought the car. Ending up getting an alarm installed which operates the central locking independantly. Cheaper on insurance as a result too!
I only have a 1.4 with central locking so I dont have to worry about the alarm part but when I had this problem I bought another key from ebay and then just swapped the blades over and re-programmed it to my car and it then worked fine - so it was my key fob.
When you say you re-programmed it did you get the locks cycling?
If not then maybe you key no longer transmits?
Take it to the key cutters, they have a machine that can sense the signal and therefore see if your key is actually transmitting
in the old air pump systems and IR sensor there are a few issues.
if you have the IR system not Radio then the sensors are in the rear view mirror, you have to point the key directly at it for it to work and on a sunny day, it doesnt work.
if you have the radio system and have programed the key and still no joy then you have to check a couple of things. pumps tend to go, if you dont get the wurrrrring sound when you press the key then either its not sending the right signal or the pump has gone.
if the pump is wurrrrrring but nothing happens, then you may have a leek or the drivers door lock mechanism may need to be replaced as that fires off all the other locks.
basically the systems on the mk2s were never great and as they get old due to the design they fall over.
check these things, i went through it all with my mk2 cordy. good luck. or just accept defeat

i had the same problem, took it to seat and they sorted it for free. Just reprogrammed the key. Think u turn the ignition on for 3 secs, press the lock button 5 times... i think
