Do they not just pull off like the older ones? If you lift up the gaitor and have a look at the bottom of the knob and if it has that ring around it I think you just widen the ring a bit then pull up. I'm not 100% sure though so don't go breaking your car lol but I would check it out.:)

How do I remove the gaitor? I'd like to know before I start to butcher it and make a mess I can't repair.

Well on the older ones the gaitor just pops off the centre console, if you go really carefully around the bottom and see, don't pull it hard if it feels like it's fixed solid though, I haven't tackled a Mk5 can only go by older ones. Don't break anything on my advice.:)

Pull the gaiter frame starting at 1 corner and work your way around, when the frame is free pull the gaiter up over the knob and you'll see a metal ring/ clamp holding the knob to the shaft. You can either prise this open with a screwdriver of use side cutters to remove it then the knob will pull off. If you want to refit it then a cable tie or hose clip will do

BTW - don't pull the gaiter up by the vinyl as it could tear, pull up by the frame

ive tried this and not a chance the gaitor frame wont lift up nor is they any clips to release it nightmare

just had another go and not a chance tried to pry it up and not moving ill break it if i pull any harder. anyone done this on a mk5?

ok ive done it hardest part was the surrounds but now ive took it off and see where the clips etc are i can shed some light on this.

sorry the pic aint ibiza mk 5 but its the best i could find with same shape. The surround is held with two prongs and two side clips.

i did it like this, but wont be held responsible for any damage.

1 - carefully placed a screwdriver at the top of the surround and gently pryed it away until both left and right prongs was out.

2 - then from the top where is was loose carefully pulled which released the two side clips and released the whole gaitor.

3 - as long as your new gear knob has the metal clip then you can rip off the current one which then with a pull the knob will be released off the stick.

4 - to remove the knob from the gaitor you need to carefully push in the 2 side clips (if original knob this is on the green plastic part) i got annoy as it was tough and broke both. Then it came off.

5 - quick clean of the gaitor push the new gear knob through the hole, the metal clips goes on afterwards. make sure you click it all the way in so it sits flush. then put the metal clip - ring on.

6 - making sure the gaitor is the right way up and the gear knob is the right way around with the metal ring in place just push down hard it will then be and stay in place a quick pull up will confirm this and wont come back off.

7 - insert the two prongs of the gaitor into the centre console and then follow the gaitor surround frame making sure its clipped into place but dont trap the gaitor.

8 - done, sit back and remove and dead skin from hands and fingers from all the ragging around in frustration

so glad i found this post, i was stuck myself when it came to changing my gear knob...cheers for the info

did you manage to do it ok?
yes, just used a flat head screwdriver and the gaiter surround popped out very very little force, unclipped existing metal clip with pliers and it came off easy.

its worth noting to take the clip of new gear knob 1st as it wont fit through the gaiter with it on, a simple squeeze and slid off and back on will do. (had me confused for 5 mins)

2 min job and look alot better than standard gear knob :D

This might help:

Got the gear knob changed today after a new one arrived, I had the nasty plastic one before and bought a leather wrapped version which came in the Sport trim models:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GEAR-STIC...391863?hash=item3ac30b29b7:g:yxIAAOSw2GlXLE9T

It took me just over an hour to change it! Don't have the exact tools to change it so had it took me a while to get the old metal clamp off which led to bruises and scratches to my hand and a bent. plier...:thumbd:

Since I didn't have the correct tool to tighten the new clamp, it was a still a bit loose even after trying to tighten it with a standard plier so it can be twisted although not by much and I can live with it.

I'll get some pictures uploaded onto here later on.

That looks like the OEM one....
What is different?
