I'm going to clean my TB tomorrow. I could not get hold of isoproplyl alcohol but I got Wynn's Electrical Contact Cleaner, which is an alcohol based spray.

It says on the can:

Cleans and degreases
Leaves no residue
Quick drying
Safe for ECUs

This should be OK shouldn't it?
 
Should have thought it would be ok, I have some that I use for cleaning electrical bits.

You can't actually buy neat isopropyl anymore, it's a listed substance (can be used to extract THC from weed).
 
Carb Cleaner is the same stuff (as TB cleaner), Halfords/Motorworld both stock it.

Remember when using this that some of it is going to go into/through the engine so is it worth risking alternative products ???

It should be able to remove grease & general dirt but also be able of dissolving tar/gum that can build up in the pipes - the stuff i have does not say what it has in it though, but it aint just IPA.

BigLad - i do mine before every track night (a quick/light clean, no strip-down), and get stuck right into it twice a year, after doing it i can feel the difference :)

Ive done mines around 7k ago, i also used the carb cleaner, but i removed the tb, sprayed alotand let the dirt drip of into a sink, follwed by a pecie of paper around the flap edges to remove any trapped dirt!
How often should this be done?
 
I do just about the same, but without removing the TB (just stick some cloth under it while in situ) - twice a year i do that.

Also remember to reset (or recalabrate) the TB when you are done :)

Theres a sensor just after it, which i herd dosnt like having any spray on it, so thats why i do it! may give a quick shot again soon when the car gets it service done

Back on topic. I cleaned the TB up today. Nice and clean and shiny inside now. Not quite sure what the benefit is though, I can't belive the dirt is that restrictive.

Could not do a TBA as I don't have Vagcom, but I'll see if I can ask a favour next time I'm in a crowd of SCNers.

Ive got a solar panel lying around i interested. ;)

by cleaning the tb, it helps it to idle better and stop the flap from sticking when it geta lot of dirt. Its not something you clean, only every time a oil change service.
 
Just read something online that makes some sense. There's a 1-2mm gap in the tb blades at idle (I hoped that was normal after holding mine up and being able to see through it!).

I guess any amount of crap in that gap is going to restrict the tiny flow of air at idle, then the ECU is going to have to compensate.
