Gone but not forgotten, my 2005 Leon FR+ has unfortunately been written off after an accident last week where a car ran into the side of me!!

Everyone is ok fortunately as i had my kids in car.

I don't want to go into too much detail as the matter is still unresolved.

My question at this time is what can I get to replace this excellent vehicle, for its compromise between performance and economy it was perfect, the only downside was we were beg.inning to outgrow it with two kids and two dogs, SO what is a suitable replacement??

My only considerations thus far are
00
A4 estate (s line preferred)
Altea Freetrack

Any thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Freetrack with the PD170 engine & 4WD is a bit of an unsung hero - cheap too (for the car it is underneath)

Parkers reckon 8.7s to 60, which isn't shockingly bad especially compared to my vRS is 8.2s

Off road innit!

And to copy the popular Rover Citycross

Thats because the head gaskets failed before they could leave the forecourt

id go with the a4 estate a B7 model with the CR170 engine would be nice and even if its not an S line its still gonna be a hella lot better than the leon :)

Think that A4 may be out of my price range, I'm looking at about £6000 spend!!

Any known problems with the altea freetrack? Whats the handling like?

I'm sorry to hear about your accident, glad everyone is OK.

My dad has got an '07 Altea FR from new and has been faultless aside from a central locking fault. It too has the PD170 and goes very well! For a car of its heft, it can't half shift through the gears. Plenty of boot, plenty of roof for racks and the like, and lots of cabin space. The dash is very meh however with lots of scratchy plastic, much like the Leon of similar vintage. On the plus side, the PD170 Alteas are privy to an injector recall so if it hasn't been done its likely you can get yourself four new injectors courtesy of SEAT! An all round good car I think.

As for the 4WD on the Freetrack specifically, I can't say. My dads is only a lowly FWD.

If you can afford it, get the face lifted one. The back end looks a lot smarter IMO.

A car I have recently discovered is the Mazda 6 MPS 2.3Turbocharged Petrol. Saloon size car with big boot.
250bhp AWD and you will find a mint one for 6k.

I have never owned a Mazda so couldn't tell you what they are like but on paper they look good.

Oh and they do a Diesel

I'd be carefull with some of the b7 tdi's do a search on audi a4 oil pump failure and all will become clear,

Finally got the payout and I know have £6k in my kitty.......

Your suggestions please with reasons and even links to ads if you know of any???

Thinking I need something with space, handling and decent power, A4 TDI is favorite at minute but been looking at LPG 4x4 also.... just dont know???????

You coukd get a mint mondeo St TDCI for that money mate, and will come.fully loaded with every toy you can imagine. Great cars too!

They are huge inside with a massive boot, look really nice and handle very well too. It's a winner :-D

As said previously do your homework on the a4, costly repairs to early tdi 140 on oil pump failure and balance shaft issues. Also read lots of horror stories about the multitronic box.
I've just been in a similar predicament after selling my lcr to get a family friendly diesel, I opted for a 2008 golf gt tdi for 6k which is perfect for me and my family. It's saving me tons of cash but nowhere near as fun, but it's serving a purpose.
If I were you I'd look very carefully if your looking at a4s although the ones I went to see were really nice, just all had the wrong engine codes!
