Hi all, I've spent ages reading various threads on the nav unit but still feel the need to ask my questions. I have a 56 ref sport with an RNS510 fitted. It does not have Bluetooth, what would I need to make it Bluetooth enabled and would it work with iPhone 5?

Sometimes the navigation looses where I am, I often notice it says satellites 0/10 or 1/11 but GPS antenna status 'connected' ??

Thirdly the AM signal is woeful, can't get a single station, does it use the original antenna?

What other features would I probably not know about yet? :)

And Is there a user manual available for it?

Thanks in advance

you may need a new gps antenna as i had that problem of not finding satellites, yes it uses original aerial and i would say for bluetooth you need the bluetooth module can't remember part no. though

Have you got an adapter for the diversity aerial?
You need something similar to this. http://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/en/Ca...nna-Adapter/VW-antenna-adapter-junction-FAKRA
Do you have a full size computer or just half size? If you have half size you will need the premium bluetooth module so you can control it on screen.
This is the same model number as I bought but you can probably get it cheaper than this if you look around. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SEAT-S...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a7e94e5cd
You will then need a wiring kit and a microphone for it. You can get a piggy back style wiring kit or I prefer the proper wiring kit as it is much neater.

Sounds like you've got a lemon RNS. I got mine off ebay, bluetooth doesnt work though because my fr didnt have bluetooth as standard, Radio signal is awesome along with the sat-nav, most accurate sat-nav ever!

The nav is almost there and at times works fine, just sometimes it's about 1/2 a mile away from your actual location! Car is a ref sport BTCC so had no Bluetooth as standard. are these units easy to remove, think ill check the GPS antenna is plugged in correctly first.

Yeah they are easily removed, apparently you get a better signal if you stick it to part of the car (Bit of metal, the antenna is magnetic). Mine is just sitting in the glove box, havnt got round to moving it lol.

sounds just like it needs a new gps antenna as when i bought my satnav it came with a faulty one and these were the symptoms so i bought a new one and it worked perfectly

Just had the unit out, the little metal aerial lead wasn't in right so that's the reception sorted. I'm now also picking up more satellites, what is a normal amount to be in view? I'm showing 5/12 now?

Oh and also where should the GPS antenna be mounted? Currently mine is above the unit on the plastic ridge of the dash

I also think that's a poor location, if you go into maps with no route set then press maps again you'll get a pop up window showing how many satellites you're locked onto, could you tell me how many yours has in view?

Otherwise hold setup for approx 10 secs then go to navigation>GPS then down to the bottom to see how many satellites in view?

Thanks for the advice

As said, you will need a new GPS reciever (<£10 on ebay) and to get bluetooth to work with the Iphone 5 you need a Skoda bluetooth unit but they are expensive (>£300)..

It varies but between 5 and 8 normally you need at least 3 for a 3d fix

Just done 28 miles since having a play with the wiring, tonight it's been fine although its ranges from 1 to 7 in view.

Does anyone know the correct place for the GPS Antenna? Where are they If the nav is factory fitted?

It's about time I got some pics of the car up too! Readers rides here I come!

Factory fit is built in with aerial so would mean taking head lining off and running wires I think, as i doubt it's already in wiring loom

Just to note I've had similar issues with slightly poor radio reception and occasional GPS drop outs, and have a similar car to the OP. It's only a minor annoyance but I guess just because the car didn't come with Nav from the factory

As far as im aware the gps aeriel has a magnetic base and should be mounted on something metallic to get the best reception

You can buy a sticky pad that's metalic on one side to mount the gps head on

Mines on the top of the unit at the moment. Its fine for a couple of days then drops satellites then If in unplug it and reconnect its ok again for a while

Wouldnt the internal electrics of the unit interfere with the gps signal
I thought you sould mount the gps behind the a pillar trim away from the unit itself...

As mentioned it could be a dodgy gps antenna and new ones are cheap enough off ebay.
Id be tempted to move the one you have first to be sure
