From April 2010 the RFL is £425 for a year and then £325 each year after that. All cars in band J 181-200g Co2 will be £325 from April :-o

The good news is those who have brought a FL FR TDi will actuall drop a whole £10 to £110a year for band E.

Below is a table Current, New car and 2010/2011 rate.

A up to 100g/km No charge No charge No charge
B 101-110g/km £35 No charge £20
C 111-120g/km £35 No charge £30
D 121-130g/km £120 No charge £90
E 131g-140g/km £120 £110 £110
F 141-150g/km £125 £125 £125
G 151-160g/km £150 £155 £155
H 161-170g/km £175 £250 £180
I 171-180g/km £175 £300 £200
J 181-200g/km £215 £425 £325

K*
includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006 201-225g/km £215 £550 £245
L 226-255g/km £405 £750 £425

:-o

bugger springs to mind!

The dealer normally fronts the bill of the first year's tax though don't they as part of the on the road price

Yes they do but the on the road price will go up to reflect this unless they agree to price freeze. like they have done with the VAT for those of us that ordered cars in Oct and are only just taking delivery.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the government are regretting their scrappage scheme and they're trying to get the money back with alternative methods? It is very specifically new cars, of which a certain percentage will have been based on the scrappage allowance.

Think about it, 2K for a scrapped car doesn't seem that much if you're paying £400 (or more) back for your first tax disc!!

This increase for cars with a high CO2 output has been in the pipeline for a couple of years now - in fact I believe that it was delayed by a year due to the recession.

The figures in post #6 are incorrect however - they are for alternative fuel source cars ie. LPG etc

The figures in post #7 also appear out of date.

Here is the link to the current government page -

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_172916

The showroom rates would appear to be -

Code:
Band	CO2 (g/km)	2010 first-year rate
A	Up to 100 £0
B	101 -110 £0
C	111 -120 £0
D	121 -130 £0
E	131 -140 £110.00
F	141 -150 £125.00
G	151 -165 £155.00
 H	166 -175 £250.00
 I	176 - 185 £300.00
 J	186 - 200 £425.00
 K	201- 225 £550.00
 L 226 - 255 £750.00
M	Over 255 £950.00

Subsequent yearly rates are -

It'll be £235 in april.

Car tax based on CO2 is the biggest con ever. More CO2 emisions = lower MPG = more tax paid from petrol. The jump above 225g/km is crazy aswell :( (Was the bad thing about owning an RX8 :()

yep a carbon based rate here almost breaks my heart especially when you know that 21% vat is on the top of the fuel cost as well €30 per week 52 weeks a year I feel I already pay the penance for the higher carbon footprint I'm sure there is more to come yet [:@]

And theres me considering chopping in my LCR for a S2000 (£425)...

Is the plan to increase the tax year by year? Wonder how much it'll be in 2011/12?

IMO the whole tax think is a joke. Why should I pay £425 to tax my car when I work from home and do 3000 - 5000 miles a year? An oil burner doing average mileage (12k pa) will be paying a lot less but pumping out a lot more cr@p no doubt.

Also can some explain why the jump is so huge between 225 and 226 yet quite small between 226 and over 225. Makes me want to drive round in a hummer lol

It's because they first brought in the higher rate for all vehicles over 225, and obviously being the scummy government they are they would never lower  tax to make it more fair. [:@]
