Rocker cover gasket fix...

Ok so as I was told before, it was my rocker cover gasket that was leaking, making the rocker cover all oily and greasy.

Since I got a week of holidays I want to go and fix it as soon as I can.
I suppose Rocker Cover Gasket(lower?!) or Rocker Cover Gasket or Elring Rocker Cover Gasket is what I need, but which one is it?!... By the way, it says "Rocker cover gasket (lower)" when I select that first one from the parts list? I don't know if there's also an 'upper' rocker cover gasket, but since I don't know all that much about gaskets and that kind of stuff, here`s a pic where you can see what the problem on my engine is...
Foto0915.jpg

So which should I order, and what tools etc will I need to replace the part? Just some normal bolts are all I can see, and I'm guessing I need to oil the gasket up before I put it in... Is that all? Maybe you guys know something I don't... Think I'll just get it of Euro car parts cause I'm guessing getting one from Stealers will take a lot more time to be delivered?

My engine is a 1.4l, and I searched by filling in my car details, so I suppose the 60hp means "it will take up to 60 hp" ....?

And also, I'd like to order today, so I can have it home before next weekend(otherwise it might take a long time before I have time to fix it).

Help is much appreciated!

Need to know your engine number to tell you which one your need.

The first two are the rocker cover gasketson for engine numbers up to ABD 558 154 and one for engine numbers after ABD 558 155.

Your engine number should be on the log book which comes with your car.

The last link of yours are rubber seals to go under your bolts. You need 3 of them

Hmm... So... The first one is up to ABD 558 154, and the 2nd is for 155...? (Cause you said "first 2 are for 154, and one for 155... and then the last is rubber seals, while i gave only 3 links :p)
Anyway, I haven't got a log book of my car that notes it(only chassisnumber...), so I'ma see around the web where I can find my engine code on the car itself.

Have a look on the sticker in your boot under the carpet the engine number should be there. And yes I do mean the first one called rocker cover gasket lower is for upto 154 and the second one is for after 155.

Well, looked in the boot and it it only says the color code on that sticker
So thought I'd look onder the hood. There's a sticker there that says:
153 in the top left corner, and then in the middle/right some weird thigns about weight
(something like:
1350
1240
(1) 750
(2) 850)

And then at bottom:
Version: 6k3ABD2
Engine: ABD

...? So... As far as I read there is no 153, so by my logic ABD2 would mean it's 155?...

That plate with numbers is towing weights and max weights for the car. The engine number should be stamped on the engine block just below the distributor.

There is a 153. Basically the engine numbers go like 558 152, 558 153, 558 154. Then they changed something and it goes to 558 155, 558 156. Every single engine has a different number on it.

Uhm... Ok so I searched under the distributor and I can't really find anything, cleaned most of the grease off. Should it be between the distributor and the pipes, or also below the pipes? between them it's all smooth it seems(even though I found a part right next to the pipes, below the distributor that seems like it SHOULD have the code stamped into it... some smooth square part), and below the pipes seems to lack a code aswell.

Would it be bad to assume it's a 153 then? I got to go for diner now, I'll take the torch out once again and try again afterwards.

Why couldn't they just put a big note in the block right at the front with the code on it, written in huge letters!.... Is it really that hard?

Im not 100% sure but I think it should be between the distributor and the pipes. That square you talk about sounds right for where it should be. Is there really only the colour code on your sticker in the boot? The engine number should be the fifth number down from the top. It will start with ABD.

I'll check again but I'm pretty sure there's actually only one number on the whole sticker, the rest are letters with things written in spain.

*sigh* How hard can it be to just make several notes of every number throughout the car :p I'll get the torch out now :(

It asks me for a login, or if I have forgotten my password, to request a login(not registration), then I need to give up a company name and once I tried allthat (with not real data mostly) it said they would contact me ASAP... So I tried going to the main page to register properly: nothing there! Got to an entirely different website! :S Could you maybe, paste the Dutch text on here?...

Anyway, as for my epic search for the mysterial code: Here's another nice one then... I've searched through the entire engine block to find one code saying
48C WUO3 114
079 892...
That's on a horizontal square piece below the distributor and below the pipes. This is of course not my chassis number.

Now here's the fun part: The only thing written on the sticker in the boot is:

"Original paint" in 5 different languages
then:
Color: rojo tornado bicapa
code: y3d

... Then there's another sticker there of which only 2 letters are actually still there: 3u or something similar, again nothing with engine code.

Then there's a number 1HO 199 354 on top of the rear right engine mount,

On the sticker where the max weights are, again, nothing about engine codes but the last part of my chassis number, R114 565 was there. Not that that helps.

Here's the funny thing: first time it was set on a name was, apparantly, 1 to the 7th of August 1995, BUT there is a "label" on the steel panel behind the front grille(no idea what you call it), that says 29-01-1994... I remember seeing 07-1994 somewhere aswell.

Now as I know the car might've been in an accident once on the right front, as the front bumper sits higher on one side(right against the grille part under the indicator), so the panel behind the grille might have been replaced with one from a 1994 car.
I can't imagine that this car has been sitting somewhere from January 1994 till August 1995 before someone bought it, that's just ridiculous...

What do you think? Just go for the 155 one I suppose?

It would seem that your car needs the 154 one I think but I can't be sure. Just checked my haynes manual, the engine number should be on the engine block just above where the gearbox is bolted on. You may need to use a wire brush or simlar to clean it up so you can see it.

The original link I used for the dutch website is here http://start.mijngrossier.nl/catalog/kentekenbouwjaar.aspx

Or maybe you can work out the gasket you need from these pictures
This is 154

Asks for a login on that website too mate. Won't even load on Firefox too... As for the pictures: I take it these are gasket pictures, and not rocker covers... I would say 154 by the length of it and the space between the 3 dots being similar to the space between the bolts in the rocker cover, but I can't really make out the perspective they're drawn at, so the 155 one could be it just as well. Guess I'm just gonna take off the cover real quick and see if I can find out that way.

This is quite annoying actually. I'm gonna go ahead and open up the cover.

EDIT: Ok it's a 154 :) so the 29-01-1994 might be correct then. Wonder how the 1-7 August 1995 got there then, but oh well.

Thanks a lot! :D

You will be able to tell straight away once you have taken rocker cover off. It's the ends of the rocker cover which are round that will give it away.

Yep, it's a 154. I wonder what happened between 29-01-1994 and date of first registration 1-7 August 1995... Probably sat somewhere, being unloved :p Anyway, ordering the "lower" Rocker cover gasket, the first one thingy... and 3 Elring gaskets... :)

Also discovered some other source of grease coming out of the engine, near the timing belt, front of the engine. Oh well!

Thanks a whole lot M1keh! :D
