Hello all,
I've noticed recently that there is a tyre rubber smell after a longish quick drive coming from the back pass side. I have not hit a kerb or anything. Car does pull slighlty to the left but I belive this is common.
I have fitted new wheels and tyres recently but the problem was there before!
Any ideas??

thanks
Phil

If you have just had new tyres fitted... go back to the place where you got them done and tell them ... the will more than likely double check your allignment and also if your tyres are wearing un-evenly.

:)

Just an idea - not had a Seat - but on my last car, if it was driven hard, i found that the rubber mounts that the exhaust is hung from were causing the smell...

i've had a handbrake cable dragging on the edge of the tyre before but could be something similar, id check the edges of wheels, especially insides to see if there is any rubbing

Good thing to check .... not only an MOT failure .... but VERY dangerous ....

Good call Flash... [B)]

Cheers guys.
I must say that it was happening before I had my new wheels and tyres. I fitted them myself. Well I got the tyres fitted on the rims by my local garage.
I'll check all those things
cheers

Same on mine, rear passenger side. Thought it was my rear caliper sticking or similar. only happens after a 20 mile plus journey, or a good thrap round the twisties on the way home.

Same here, but Tam's explanation is probably worth investigating further.
Was there a solution Tam, or did you just live with it?

Exactly the same on my LCR !!!

Has to be the heat from the exhaust mountings or underbody coatings heating up. That can be the only explanation with so many of us experiencing that strange rubbery hot smell etc & only on the nearside after a thrash !!!

No solution .. I just lived with it ... never seemed to cause a problem.

As i said - it wasn't on a Seat car .. but an Astra .. and it happened from day 1 when it was new .. and it was still happening 80,000 miles (2.5 years later) when it went back, never found out exactly what it was, but never had any problems caused by it either.

I put it down to rubber mounts for the exhaust .. or the rubber hoses for the brake fluid, could of been either .. both would be very hot after a hard drive.

I have the same symptons - noticed it yesterday. I think the brakes may be binding as thats what it smells like and my fuel consumption has gone down hill. Have it booked in for tuesday. At least its the rears - would be more concerned if it was the front.
