right im about to fit my new engine in my car but am a bit unsure as to 'how to run it in' ive been told by a few people that ill need to give it quite a bit of beans while runnin it in but im not sure as and when i should be doin this, oil intervals etc i was assuming that i change the oil at 100 miles 500 miles and a 1000 miles then every 3k after and give it some beans now and again and vary my speed if on a motorway. but most say make sure you drive it quite harshly.

so can any of you shed some light on this for me please as ive never had to run a engine in and give me some advice before i murder another motor

cheers gaz

I've just ran mine in and i kept mine under 3k for the first 3-400 miles then increased the revs as the mileage clocked up another 150-200 miles each time, i changed the oil after 20 miles for another lot of running in oil, only due to a slight leak that i had but alex form backdraft said do this anyway, then i changed it for proper oil after a 1000 miles, i heard conflicting ways of running it in and just went with what i thought best and a little guidence.

Fingers crossed so far no leaks or use of oil!!

ok cheers m8 ill be orderin some in the next week or so, so to run it in ill have to give it some beans as soon as i start it up first time? then change oil after 20 miles then how often?

will i be ok if i do it on:

20 miles then, 100 miles then, 500 miles and 1000 miles then every 3k after?

also do i use runnin in oil all the time or just the first 20 miles?

Let if tick over on first start up no revs at all, get it warm and check the water levels and for leaks etc.

I changed the oil after 20 miles for running in oil and after 1000miles changed for normal oil iirc,

i'll dig out what i ran mine in at revs to miles. I'm sure for the first 300-400 miles didn't go over 3k then increased the revs for every 150-200 miles covered. e.g. 500 < 4k, 600 < 5k etc

i had a thread on here about running in i'll find it for yah.

Here you go might help yah.

oops should of searched before i posted really

some good info there but its the same thing different opinions and which one is best lol

wel ive got atleast a week to think about it before i get the motor in and runnin and will no doubt ask more people questions as i get closer to d-day

thanks for the info phil and cupra20

i used cheap mineral oil for 20 miles, changed again at 100 miles for the millers running in oil which i kept in for another 500 miles.take the revs to where peak torque is then change gear as i was told this was the best way to bed the rings in.mine hasn't used a drop since my rebuild!

Mineral oil to start and drop it after about 50 miles. any amount of wear normally happens in the first few miles anyway.

Then load it up like that link says, dont take it easy either as you want the rings to seal properly. Do it right and you'll have good compression, wrong and you'll glaze the bores.

There is a lot of debate on how to run a newly rebuilt engine in. However the majority of the top tuners (especially the swedes who probably put out the largest number in europe) swear to mineral oil and giving it a heavy right foot and then changing the oil.

Think about it like this: Non FI engines being turbo charged go in for tuning on the dyno after being rebuilt. These mapping session typically last 5-7 hours. During that time the engine sees max revs and load many many times.

ive fitted the engine in now and its nearly ready for its runnin in jus need to put the driveshafts back in and fit the front pannel with and red and she's ready to go ive bought some halfrauds 10-40 mineral oil and spoke to the guy who built the motor and said that this will be ok then change it after 50 miles for some more mineral oil without changine the filter and then at 500 miles re- change the oil for some good 10-40 semi synthetic oil, im ok with the oil change situation but still not sure what route to go down with regards to givin it plenty of beans so im goin to try cupra20's method of opening it up slowly as the milage increases.

how many of you have tried this way and is it a good way of runnin in?

cheers all for the past info hopefully i can now have some fun in the car and end my month of bad luck lol

Fingers crossed it goes alright mate, i havent had any issuse with mine so far from the way i ran mine in, hasn't lost a drop of any fluids and thats been a few thousand miles now.

yes m8 car is runnin just need to sort out the water leak out get some tax and get some miles on it cant wait it feels like its been off the road for ages

when i ran mine in took it steady for 300 miles then started using more revs for 200 more, then drove it like normal.
