Will any modifications need to be made to fit an S3 intercooler into my fr tdi? I have read a few threads and i know the S3 is a good replacement for the standard intercooler on the PD 170, but does all the standard pipe work fit? Cheers folks

Does an uprated intercooler make that much difference to the TDI's ? I thought the standard IC was effecient enough ?

Or are you guys basically pushing the limits of the OE IC with what you have already done to the car and needing greater capacity ?

Pointless upgrade in my eyes unless you've managed to find a supplier of these mystical upgraded nozzles...? (Awaiting good news)

Last I heard was a reply from Allard Turbo Sport, Allan Allard said he had dealings with Ricky from dieselpower.cz as they help with their race 1.9tdi but as far as he knew, there are no uprated nozzles available yet for the 170PD

I mentioned that they list them, he never addressed that point, just said "I understand he is working on 2.0 TDI injectors"

Maybe I should reply and ask him to get a full picture of what stage they are at with the 2.0tdi next time he is in contact with them...

How much is an s3 cooler and pipes these days?

THS do a cooler now for the 2.0 TDi and its £475 plus vat

Its the same as the one they have developed for the S3 that the Audi boys really rate as a good upgrade to the S3 cooler

An upgraded cooler will give lower intake temps and just as importantly less of a pressure drop between the turbo and the intake manifold. a wise move for the DPF delete boys . . . . .

Which is why i asked the question about these guys pushing the limits of the standard IC because what i have read stated that the standard one on the TDi was more than up to the job.

I suppose the only way to tell would be to monitor the intake temps on a relatively standard car vs. one of the highly tuned ones and see what the differences were and if the IC was managing them ok.

The standard cooler is on the 2.0tdi and 2.0tfsi is very good for an OEM cooler.

The S3's is better and the THS is better again.

The gains from upgrading the cooler on a stage 2 tdi will be there but it depends on how much you want to spend on possibly small gains. My main point for suggesting the THS cooler is that if you were to invest 350 plus 3hrs labour on an s3 then it would make sense to spend a couple of hundred more on the tTHS unit which has larger diameter inlet/outlet high flow end tanks and a larger more efficient core.

The gains will deffinately be there but for me personally they would be too small for me to make the investment. I have the same cooler as the 2.0tdi on a 355bhp cupra and im satisfied with the std cooler.

I always said the gains are negligable, but when I mentioned it to Al @ Awesome the other day (£300 i think for the S3 one in their shop) he said it did make sense and that he had seen some tdi's that had been remapped blow their std IC's. I didnt go into detail but from the way he was talking im pretty sure that Awesome could fit one to your FR.

They can but IMHO the costs out weigh the benefits for our cars. If we where going Hybrid or big turbo then yes
