I bought a VW MCD Sat Nav from someone on here over a week ago and it finally arrived today. It has a nice dent on the corner of the chassis too!

Now I've taken out the Alana, fitted a plug and play lead (red plug) and plugged it all in, but the stereo won't turn on. The CD mechanism continually whines but no buttons will function. The buttons will illuminate when the lights are turned on. I don't know if I need to start swapping wires about or if its something up with the unit.

I've also noticed the "rev" wire on the P&P lead goes nowhere...does this have to be fitted to a pulse wire for it to turn on?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like maybe the permanent feed is missing to it. That may explain the whiring of the CD and deadness of the rest of the unit.

Is there a fuse on the unit?

Yeah there's a good 10 amp fuse in it.

The only additional loom I'm using is the plug and play one, otherwise its all as standard.

And goble, yes this has been taken out of another MK4, allegedly.

Where did this plug and play loom come from? Can you buz it out with a meter to check it just in case? Is there 12V coming out the end of the loom? Sometimes the crimps can push out! Checked the fuse in the fuse box?

The unit should operate with only +V, switched and GND I would have thought.

then it wont work, you dont have a GPS beacon on your roof which sits with the aerial, you'll have to wire in speed sensor wire and alot more all of which your loom wouldnt of come with because it's not a standard fit for your car.. a sat nav loom would be requred which is build into the main loom

No, it had the standard Alana single CD in it, hence the title saying retrofit.

http://www.byminsk.com/images/VW/VW.htm20.gif - this pinout shows all the plugs on the HU. The red P&P connector is the section on the left. It has a wire going from the KL15 to the K1588 on the bottom section, then there's a rev wire which is loose and doesn't go into anything. The other wires appear to mirror themselves from plug to plug, so its basically a little extension lead.

goble, I have the GPS/FM aerial from the same car. This is the SEAT version of the MCD sat nav.

The gala pinout is the speed sensor one, right?

I tried that vwnavi site but it seems to be pretty dead these days. I did a search and nothing substantial came up :(

Another note, there are people on here that have the colour sat navs working in their MK4s, I have the monocolour one, which was factory fit to the MK4 and was an older version. Oh I'm confused!

Does the back of your unit look like this?

So let's get this right? Your "Special Delivery" finally arrives and now it doesn't work?
