I have a 2005 tdi seat altea which had new rear discs and pads fitted 12 weeks ago. Last week thr r/h rear wheel was hot and smelt terrible when I got home. The next day the l/h rear wheel was hot and smelt terrible but the r/h was fine. Over a few days one or other wheel had the same problem. Took it to our local garage who said r/h needed a new calliper it was stuck on, he showed us on the ramp the wheel was not freely spinning and l/h was fine. Whilst waiting for the calliper to arrive the brake fluid all leaked out of the r/h calliper so towed back to garage. They have replaced that calliper but we continue to have the hot and smell with the l/h rear wheel. He says the calliper is fine and has no idea why it is doing it, it is still intermittent. Do we need a new calliper this side too ? Or is it something else ? Am completely stuck as we are over in France and struggling to find a decent mechanic to trust. Please help !

warped discs? If they have now overheated they are more likely to be warped now. use a dial gauge to check the run out, with wheel off.
It could also be your bearings are worn, overheating themselves or allowing the disc to "wobble"

The discs and pads and new bearings were fitted early Jan. Could they be faulty ? Could it be anything to do with towing a trailer ? We have been using that alot getting materials for our extension ? So strange whatever has caused it is doing it both sides ? and garage hasn't a clue. Can't afford to throw money at it if it's not the caliper.

Just to throw my two-penneth in, I'd doubt the trailer would be the cause of the issue; as long as you're not exceeding the towing weights (depending on whether it's a braked or unbraked trailer) then there should be no issue and it's indicative of a problem elsewhere. Not sure where, but I wouldn't be looking at the trailer!
