Hello people,

I have just signed up on here to post this question, please help as it will be appreciated.

Ok so I have recently bought a 11 plate 1.4 Seat Ibiza Chill.

Having had a full service on it I have become to be aware of a quiet cat like purring noise whenever I switch the engine on. This strange intermittent purring noise is affected when moving my steering wheel from left or right - it doesn't turn off or get louder when I turn the wheel.

What is baffling is that it seems to purr intermittently. I had booked it in to the garage to be looked at and sods law it didn't make a sound when appointment day arrived. I think this purring noise happens in wet and dry weather.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a clue what this is? It sometimes purrs louder than other times. It seems to die down when driving....so annoying.

Oh I have another 2 months warranty on this hence why I am trying to find an answer before the end of the 3 month warranty :help:

Thank you in advanced people :D

When/while it makes this purring noise, switch on the headlights and even the rear window heater - if it gets louder, it could indicate an alternator bearing running a bit dry.

Thanks for the information. I will try that. Can an alternator affect the steering wheel mechanism as I originally thought it was linked to power steering as it effects the noise.

Well the power steering hydraulic pump is powered by the battery/alternator and is a gross user of 12 volts - so turning the wheel will give the alternator a fright, just like turning the lights and rear window heater on.
