Seat Ibiza clutch bearing or driveshaft bearing weird ass noise?

I have a 2000 Seat Ibiza 1.4 S if that makes any difference, not sure but might as well include as much information as possible.

I don't have much of a clue about cars to be honest, but I drove to work fine today but then when I was driving home it felt as if there wasn't as much power in the car as there used to be and it sounded as if maybe I had a hole in my exhaust. As I was driving home the sound got worse and it honestly sounded like my exhaust had fallen off and was being dragged along the road, like a horrible scraping sound. Got home, checked and my exhaust has no holes in it and it was securely mounted and hadn't been scraping the floor or anything.

Asked my Dad to come out with me whilst I drove it around the block and he said it sounds/looks like it may be the clutch bearing has gone or the drive-shaft bearing, but he's no mechanic. With the engine turned on, but the car not moving, I was putting the clutch in and out and there was no sound but when I drive, the second I take my foot off the accelerator a horrible scraping squealing whining sound happens, still happens when if I put the clutch all the way down and just coast.

Any ideas, and any ideas on a price guys?

maybe drive sharft but again im no mechanic:lol:
if your thrust bearing goes(clutch bearing) it would stop as you press the clutch in when the car is still and in neutral and when out be kinda like a knocking sound all the time

You could check the engine mounts are ok. Definitely not the thrust bearing and I would've thought a driveshaft bearing would be unaffected by the throttle but not sure. I would try putting it in gear with the engine running and handbrake on and let the clutch in and out just to the biting point and no more and get someone to look at the wheels and engine to check for movement. Also try it in reverse aswell for movement and wierd noises. Hopefully something will show up. It might also be worth jacking up the front wheels and checking for play.

I hope it's nothing too expensive. Was going to take it to garage after work today as I finished earlier than usual, drove two roads away, maybe 500m, had to pull in to let some car past and couldn't get it back into gear. The thing just wouldn't budge, clutch pressed down and couldn't move it and couldn't even move it when the clutch isn't being pressed. It just wouldn't budge. Two guys from a gas company who saw me came and pushed my car whilst I steered it to a safe place and the first thing he said was that it sounds like the clutch bearing (he heard and saw me come past and heard the noise it was making before I had to pull in to let someone past and before I broke down). Called my Dad out and he towed me home.

Do you think it sounds like it's a clutch bearing? I have no idea what a clutch bearing is, but I'm just worried it may be something really expensive like gearbox or something because I wasn't able to even get it into ANY gear. I can now, for some weird reason, but there is no way I'm driving it because it'll happen again.

You might actually have more than one problem. Do you know if you have a hydrolic clutch? sometimes air in the system could cause that. Does it go in and out of gear when the engine is off? It does sound like you'll need to get someone to look at it. It's really difficult to tell what the problem is without checking the car over. Maybe someone on here lives close and could have a look and advise you.

I don't think I have a hydraulic clutch, just a... I dunno, normal clutch lol. It doesn't go in or out of gear whether the engine is on or off, I think my gearbox is knackered, and that's going to be expensive. :-(

Let me know how you get on Whitey. :)

At least that's not too bad mate, a lot less expensive than a gearbox.

Anyone know about if you can get gearboxes repaired, rather than having to buy a new one? I've never heard of any like repairing companies kinda thing but I'm assuming anything can be repaired, unless it's a sealed unit?

There's usually gearbox specialists around. You could check the linkage isn't damaged or where the gear stick goes through the floor. I wouldn't have thought it would more than £50 - £100 tops for a second hand gearbox for your car. The polo's probably got the same box aswell.
