Hi guys,

I have one question for you, I hope you can help me. In another thread in Cupra Forums I mentioned that I was planning to buy a tuning box as my first tuning move on my car. I concluded on this after I read a few posts in this forum. Since then someone mentioned remapping as a better solution "especially for TDI's". Result IM CONFUSED !

Any help guys ? What are the differences between a tuning box and a remap, how do they work on the car? Are they reversible ? Do I need to change other things on the car for safety reasons with one or the other ie brakes, clutch disc etc and finally how much do they cost and whats the benefit in bhp (assuming my engine is 110bhp I think)

It might be useful for your info to mention that I moved from UK to Cyprus permanently now so anything you propose will be subject to me finding a tuner in Cyprus that can do it or that I can do personally.

Thank you guys

They do Revo, which is a proper remap, and recommended by many on here and on other forums.

Tuning boxes are good if its a real tuning box rather than a "resistor in a box". VanAaken Tuning Boxes were recommended in the day, if I was to get a tuning box I'd go for one of them.

yeah agreed a proper remap is what you want. a TB works ok they work by making the car overfuel, i used to have one on mine, made it a abit rough and lumpy though.

and yes yours will be a 110 engine if its the GT TDI, you lucky man with a mk2 110. nice.

Thanks TomB, Thanks Steww. I think I will go for a remap although I understand that this is not easily reversible in case something goes wrong.

Couple more important questions though. if anyone is in the know please share the wisdom.

a. Do I need to change other things on the car for safety reasons ie brakes, cluch, other stuff
b. How much does a remap cost (also what is stage 1 stage 2 etc) whats the benefit in bhp

All help appreciated.

ps. i just realised there is an "introduce yourself" section. I'll do just that now.

If what you want to do with your car is basically make it quicker, then firstly a suspension kit will help the car grip at quicker speeds while cornering and make it more stable when either giving it the beans, or whacking on the brakes.

Hence why brakes can be a good idea next... Obviously you can carry more speed towards a bend, because you can brake quicker. Also very helpful in potential accident situations.

You could simply upgrade your current discs and pads for a couple of hundred quid. Alternatively for bigger bucks there is always the option of bigger discs and pads...

www.awesome-gti.co.uk are a competitive, reputable supplier, and I would imagine they'll ship abroad - worth checking out eitherway.

As far as the cost of a Revo remap is concerned, checkout www.revotechnik.com - they're priced at £399+VAT. You may be able to get a switching unit whereby you can change between the Revo and original maps - it obviously costs more, another £150+VAT.

Anyhoodle - hope that helps you out.

Cheers,

Awesome thanks timbotdi.

Quicker car: I am under the impression that the GT version of this TDI is riding lower than normal. Never had a grip problem on corners (obviously I can't say i'm the fastest driver) I think the car lacks in straight line acceleration though.

I think your idea of a new brakes is v. good though. I tried the website you gave me but they don't seem to have the Seat Ibiza MK2. If I was to order new discs and pads (preferably bigger) which pieces should I order. As I live in Cyprus, I have to get the order right hence why I need to know exactly what components and additional bits and pieces I need.

I found the REVO supplier in Cyprus and going to pay him a visit some time this week to see what he can do on my car.

Any more info guys.

Any more info guys. I received a quote from the REVO dealer in Cyprus and will save the money to remap the engine. I am also thinking in terms of safety and driveability to upgrade alloys from the current 15" spoke wheels to 16" lower profile alloy wheels from a reputable brand. I would also like to upgrade in the future the brake discs and pads.

Any advice on good alloy wheels (like OZ or similar) and any advice on brake discs and pads would be great guys.

Bigger alloy wheels won't really help with safety, or to be honest, driveability...

I would concentrate on the brakes, and leave the wheels for when you have the money, simply to boost the aesthetics of the car.

Give Awesome-GTI a quick bell - they're very helpful / knowledgable, and would be best positioned to advise on what the right parts for your car are... 00441617760777

I can't remember what Polo model the Mk2 was based on - at a guess, it's the Mk4, but best to check.

changing from the 15s to the 16s with lower profile tyres makes a little difference (i did this on mine) reduces tyre roll, so thats a nice change and wont cost too much. Nothing big needs to be done to the brakes they cope well already but a decent set of ferrodo pads wont go amiss.
