I just read somewhere that the car that lapped the ring was not a standard 280, something about a performance pack on it

Any truth in it ?

yes, it had the optional performance pack

"Brembo high-performance brakes, specially designed 19-inch alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres"

If you need to lap the ring in under 8 minutes. ;)

It's not just about tyres , we have no idea what other tweaks were on the car when the lap time was posted , if the car was straight off the production line then fair play but we all know from the video it was a test mule car which is different from a production model.
The real bench mark will be when stig gets hold of it and he posts a proper time on a proper circuit :)

Tongue firmly in cheek, It also had a professional racing driver behind the wheel, but it's all just a bit of marketing hype isn't it.

Don't want to shatter your perceptions but an airfield in the south of England isn't a proper circuit. However if TopGear decide to test it, (history suggests it will get overlooked), then doubt it will be too shabby around a circuit with 4 or 5 straights and some less than technical corners with biblical amounts of track width and run off. I don't see the TopGear test track being a truly authoritative test of any car they have ever thrown around it.

Just a bit of TV fun.

I can't believe you thought I was serious about too gears track Z ? Lol lol

But it is a good benchmark test against the other cars that have already been around the track , and it will really show how well the diff performs , if it finishes in the "hot hatch group" then we can gauge what sort of car this really is but if it punches above it's weight and finishes in the BMW M3 league then we will instantly be able to see that indeed SEAT have produced a car which could be a bit special

What the same way you thought I was serious about tyres Rob…really?? :) >>>;)<<< Its a clue. Stop fishing for a rise, because I've seen it all before. ;) I'm far from being serious, I am mocking and engaging in a little reflective banter. :)

TG test track is an OK bench mark of cars that have been round an airfield in very changeable conditions. It's a yard-stick, but that is about it.

Its pub banter made for TV, even the people that produce it know that to be the case and I celebrate that.

But what is a genuine test? Because no-one generally buys a car with the intention of throwing it around an airfield or a racing circuit. The majority of its life will be spent commuting, and the occasional fun B-road blast…hardly a taxing exsistence. Maybe 1% will take it on a track day, and another 1% will shorten the life of their clutch by ragging it up and down a short bit of tarmac for what…oh yer pub banter again. :D

I certainly don't believe its being ragged round the Nürburgring ring by a professional racing driver either for anything less than its marketing potential. Its an impressive achievement but doubt anyone here could replicate it unless they have the prowess of a professional and the technical support to go along with it. Its a production car, but its not being tested as a production car or under the conditions in which a production car would normally be driven.

All great interest for banter and marketing spiel, and a competitive notch on an industry bedpost. :) SEAT are playing the same game other sectors of the car industry have, for what? simply to sell more cars.

Does any of that mean a great deal to the end consumer unless they are shallow enough to be taken in by the hype. ;)

Come's back to the same issue, if you like the car you buy it, if you don't like the car you don't buy it :) But the constant broken spiel about it not being as good as this, or as good as that are all the same thing as the marketing hype. Pub banter!

Firstly ,thanks to ZBOYD for all his help and input . Secondly, whatever you think of the new Cupra, the Renault Meganesport owners will not be happy about losing the record...I'm sure they've made comments already on various sites :D
I came over to SEAT from Renault (cliosport200 ) so I know what they are like ;)
Thirdly, I'm looking forward to a little dabble in the 280 with DSG (although I'd prefer a manual ) at my local dealer soon :p
I'm not sure I'll afford one but who cares if I get a test drive anyway .

Sorry to dig this up, just learned about the record smashing.
The Megane RS 265 Trophy was one beast of a car and the Cupra just took TEN seconds off of its Nur time... that's one heck of a lot! Can someone confirm it is exactly the same circuit? Cos I'm under the impression the track changes quite often up there in Germany...

The best test for any car is to test drive it yourself and see if it suits your driving style. I test drove a manual FR diesel estate on my favourite road/test track and was so impressed that if it was not the Cupra I would have gone for the FR diesel and I hate diesels.........
