Just by way of info I mailed a tuner in the NW about this and was told.

. One thing i will say though is that every VW Group dealer has to now scan each new vehicle that enters their workshop and send the files online to be checked against a standard base map, If the values do not match then the vehicle is put under "TD1" status, the standard file is re-written and the car flagged for future visits. Not many people are aware of this but i feel that as a potential customer its best that you are informed of every eventuality possible.

Brilliant info.
Now, as your car is flagged as TD1...does that mean that when the dealer goes to claim back money for warranty work...they won't pay? Which in turn means the dealer won't do the work?

Can't convince me that any dealer with so work they're can't charge under warranty.

Warranty is a right PITA...
It's almost easier when you don't have it.

So basically, if I spend 500 on a remap, when I take it in for a small service they're going to overwrite my map?

I'm disappointed to say the least

Yeah its not the best of news. I think you should be within your rights to deny them access to the ODM port unless they get your authorisation, it is your car at the end of the day.

Just had another mail..
Yeah i can understand its a bit off putting, manufacturers have been putting many obstacles in the way to prevent third parties playing about with their products , usually to prevent unnecessary warranty claims that could have been avoided - normally through problems that have been caused by people providing poor quality/untested maps or massively over enhancing the files in order to gain higher figures thus taking components way out of their tolerances.

Problems occurring with decent, well tested software is seldom seen, however if an issue arises REVO are very quick to rectify it with a support team second to none.

Having spoke to the dealer today they explained that only electrical faults (be it engine, ABS, Airbags etc) require a routine fault code scan so providing a fault doesn't arise then the new software will remain undetected. A number of vehicles known to have enhanced software installed have also been through their workshop and have been scanned without highlighting any abnormalities or receiving negative feedback from VW HQ and their warranty remains intact.

Well I'd be takin them to court if they erased a 500gbp map without my permission.
Denying warranty work is one thing, their prerogative, but that would be like stealing a laptop I may have left in the back of the car.

I have no dpf, yet any warranty work I have had over the past two years has been fine. However all my warranty work has been like lights or body work, but I doubt that any dealer can be arsed scanning a car before they do work, but you could always ask Tristan on here at ted johnsons or Bristol street motors as its now called

I guess I need to go hunting for a good independent in Northumberland.
Can't be arsed to drive to the other side of the UK for a small service.

Good chance I'll use the local chappies at I've always used.
