So a warning has popped up advising me to check the oil level. Using the dipstick is not as clear as I would of expected. There is not a solid line of oil to indicate where the oil level is, rather a few smudges in the middle of the "zone" and oil on the very end tip.

So I assume I must add some oil but what type do I add? There is mention of life long oil in the manual, but what brand? Real, semi or full synth? Of course I will ask the dealer but they are closed now and you may be able to help me today.

If it's a diesel and you're on long life servicing then you need 5w30 VW 507 long life oil. If you're not on long life or drive a petrol I have no idea...sorry :)

It would help if you told us what engine you have?

All vw diesels with a DPF need the 507 oil regardless of service schedule.

You may well be right but I thought the service book quoted a different spec for yearly/10k servicing. It was a couple of years ago since I looked and I have slept since then so I could well be confused.

1.4 act fr

Spoke to the dealer and they sell the oil so that would be easiest. How much should I add though? The dip stick is not very clear indicator.

bcroninuk: Read the posted thread. I have 1.4 ACT FR as well, the same issue. Fixed, solved.
