I have owned my 51 reg Leon since May this year and from the start I always knew the clutch wasnt too great, my mechanic siad it would need replacing somewhere down the line but not anytime soon.

The issue I have is that its terrible going up really steep hills in 1st / 2nd and not great on moderate hills in 2nd /3rd. Also reversing up any sort of an incline is quite bad.

On the flat and small inclines the performance is what I would expect from the engine.

Thinking its the clutch which could be causing this, I have been ringing garages for quotations and mentioning the issue. Every garage I have spoke to have said that what I am describing doesn't sound like a slipping clutch and from my experience with failing clutches in past cars it doesn't seem like it to me.
Only 1 x garage said to me it sounds like the pressure plate is slipping which is linked to the clutch.

Changing gear is fine and setting off in higher gears is fine also.
Its possible the 1.6s engine is a dog up hills unless at hi revs but I don't have anything to compare it to :p

My concern that winter is on its way and its terrible up hills now without the added issue of ice and snow so I don't want to fork out £300 for a clutch when it could be something else entirely!

One last thing to mention is I do get this random stall whilst driving, its literally a fraction of a second at any speed 10 mph / 20 mph / 80 mph under revs or coasting.
the rev counter drops to zero briefly and the car lurches. The best way to describe is like I have turned the ignition off for a split second and the bump started the car.
Sometimes this happened 3 x times a week, sometimes once a month!

Ive been told to could be camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor or others and so far I haven't changed any yet due to lack of funds.

This may not be linked to the performance issue but its worth mentioning.

Has anyone out there experiences a problem like this with their 1.6s?

Thanks !

LOL :D

I can say for sure the hills im talking about aren't that steep and the handbrake is def off :p
