Seat Leon Mk2 2.0 TDi Gear Shifting Noise

Hi all,

I'm wondering whether any people with some more knowledge about the internal workings of the gears can help me?

I've had my Leon Mk2 for a little over a month and love it, but it has recently seemed to develop a weird sound when shifting between certain gears. It sounds a softer version of the scrape of a wiper blade going over a dry windscreen. It doesn't happen every time, in fact only occasionally, but when it does happen, 90% of the time it does it when shifting into 3rd gear but it has happened in 4th and also in 2nd I think.

Any ideas? I've just started a new job so feel a bit hesitant to ask to come in late because my car is in the garage!

I couldn't say for sure if it is the synchros but if it is then it will either be a gearbox rebuild (replacement of the synchros) or a replacement gearbox.

The syncros (synchromesh rings) in a gearbox are used to move gear cogs into the correct alignment during a gear change so the teeth of two gear cogs line up with each other when they get meshed together. Syncros prevent gear crunch which is what happens when trying to mesh two gear cogs together where the teeth on the two cogs are out of alignment with each other.

If you can live with the noise you can just continue running with it like that until it gets worse and/or the gears start crunching between changes.

Speed-Freek has it right, but let me add that the main gears are always meshed together: they are engaged by dog clutches on the selectors. The synchromesh rings sit between the selectors and the gears and speed up or slow down ("synchronise") the selector and gear dog clutch teeth.

Thanks for the replies guys. My Leon is still under its three months warranty from the dealer so would you recommend given this that I take it back in and get them to look at it?

Yes, without a doubt. If you suspect an issue that may be covered under your warranty then get it back to the dealer ASAP.
