seriously ill cupra????

ok i think my cupra may be dead, i was driving at normal speeds when my oil pressure light came on so i bought some oil and gave it a top up, the light went out for a couple of mile but then came back on about 5 mins later i lost almost all drive and my petrol engine sounds like a very old almost dead diesel engine, horrible rattling type noises, so i stoped the car and got a tow home not had a pro look at it yet but a couple of people i know had a look and listen and think it could be that the oil pump died and some damage may have been caused by this. any ideas on what kind of damage and does this sound like a likely explanation, i thought oil pumps almost never died.

mate as soon as that oil pressure light came on....you should of stopped the car where it was and turned it off, running your car without oil pressure will seize the engine, destroy your turbo etc etc sounds like you could of done some serious damage to the engine

did you drive it much the first time it came on? could of dropped some valves

being stupid i asumed i was low on oil as it happened about a year ago and thats all it was, i think i drove for about 45mins with it on befor i stoped to put oil in it then it died. im not to hot on mechanics but i take it dropping valves would be bad?. someone said the first thing to go after the oil pump would be the crank shaft i think. does that sound right? and is that bad?

most likely outcome? 1 dead engine? id really like to know the beast and worst case scenario i have here, just done a google search for oil pump problems and its not looking good for my biza.

how about cost then? can certain parts be repaired or is it difficult to tell which need replacing?

Hold your horses gents.

I have seen this a many times, most recently on Bill's old golf 1.9 IHI monster. (in this case one of the rubber baffles from the seat sport sump came off and got sucked in)

But It tends to be the oil pickup pipe gets clogged with carbon. Take the sump off and clean the gauze out or buy a new one, there about £ 8 i think.

Put sump back on fill it with oil and let it idle for 10 mins then take it for a run, it should be fine.

Onle ever seems to happen to 1.8T's but mainly the longditudally mounted engine's in passat's and A4's etc.

are you sure its not the oil pressure sensor thats broken i have got the same last year it turend out to be the sensor

it cant be a faulty sensor as i have a big loss of drive and also the noise its making is not right, it would be great if what cupramatt says is what gone wrong but would i still get these symptoms with that problem? some i spoke to said something about a mesh filter can get blocked on these stopping the oil getting around the engine apparently its a common problem, he's a vw mechanic but also a friend of a friend, does this sound possible? anothing thing the turbo was still sucking in air as it normally would but i had lost almost all drive.

best to get inspected properly
