Guilty as accused. I think I've done this in every car I've owned, looking for 5th, 6th or 7th depending on the model.

I've even tried changing up to 5th in my Triumph Herald!

Adrian.

I use 2 general rules (my own opinon) when using 6th

1. Never let the revs go below 1.5k in any gear. In my LCR this is about 45mph for 6th. As long as you are just cruising there is no undue stress on the clutch. Only accelerate very gently from this speed
2. Alway assess the road. I would never use rule 1 if the road was uphill. As this will add to loading.

Not using 6th until 70mph is a total waste of fuel.

My TDI doesnt like 6th any lower than 55-60mph depending on uphill/downhill road.

I certainly dont use 6th to boot it, I like my flywheel in one piece thanks ;)

Anything above 55mph for cruising is about right for me in 6th.

i think around 55 to 60 aswell...also if u are kinda in a rush and your making swift progress its best to get in 6th asap if your engine is cold..;).....i have a mate with a mini cooper s, and he wacks it in 6th at 30mph:doh:

yeh its mainly a motorway gear i use it at 50mph it puls away very easly

i use it quite a lot. depends on how i feel like driving at the time.

in my fiesta courtesy car at the moment ive only just started getting out of the habbit of going for 6th gear lol.

Heh I have to pause a few seconds often in my girlfriends car when doign a manouvre because I know the gate is different to the Cupra but have to think where reverse is.

Opposite side down where 6th should be :p

I have gone for 7th a few times too lol, but only as far as grabbing the gear lever and noticing it's already quite far over right :)

blimey guys.... what kph speed were you doing to attempt 7th gear?:-o

i use 6th alot... usually for mways but as long as the engines not struggling ... 60ish upwards.
